Healthy food by law for our kids, or the right to choose chips and burgers?
Are the school gate chip merchants bordering on child abuse?

The women are using the children to vent their frustrations at being patronised by a young-ish jack-the-lad cockney-sounding chef, the funny thing is he is correct and they are very, very silly; there is little hope for the children when the grown-ups around them act in this way.

PS Juice, like fruit that grows on trees, should contain sugar, not nasty sweeteners - whilst I think it is correct to eat healthy things, I do not see many fat children around despite the media hype.

I'm really grateful that I was made to eat healthy food as a child. It is automatic now for me to eat healthily and it must have done some good as at age 54 people think I'm in my early 30s - can't be bad eh?. My neice has been brought up in the same way and refuses junk food, is vegetarian and is the brightest kid at school. We have a duty to look after children in the best possible way. The occasional chip or biscuit is ok but as part of the diet - not all of it. I think Jamie Oliver should be knighted.

I think a mixture of the two would be the ideal.
The mothers however, should be ashamed of themselves and learn some restraint. The new laws are trying to HELP their children.
The poor children of the school gate chip merchant mothers are probably stuck eating chips seven nights in the week and dont know what a vegetable looks like.

What really is the problem? It's not to say that eating in school is the only food they get. They can eat chips and burgers after school. Since the role of a school is to educate, they should provide healthy food. Jamie Oliver is right.

Sugar-free juice? That's a new one on me.

Some of the schools that have changed their food policies do allow burgers and chips once a week which i think is fine. Those women are getting the children greasy junk food everyday. They should be ashamed of themselvesand if i thought my child was ordering and getting that food when o thought they were having a decent meal, i would be incredibly angry.

Personally I think both a right to a certain degree, I do agree that children should be able to have a choice ... at my childrens school they banned juice and only allow water, which I don't agree with, sugar free juice is fine, and kids should be allowed it.

But at the same time healthy eating should be encouraged, maybe rather than attacking these women, they should be made to take a course, to look into the effect of fast food, grease on the body, what damage they may be causing their kids, and maybe to teach them how to cook healthy food which tastes good but it also fun for the kids.

BOTH wrong, the chip ladies should be making healthier food, and the jamie oliver is a bit too-faced, he worked at a school making kids healthy dinners, then had the cheek to BILL the school a huge amount for his time.. as if he hasn't got enough money.. double standards if you ask me... He is supposed to do these things to teach healthy living, NOT make a packet out of it!!

Jamie Oliver is right, however people do need to be educated to make informed choice, vans touting for business outside schools albeit fast food or ice cream should be banned, for several reasons..
1) health and safety, they cause all sorts of unruly ques and distracted behaviour as well as traffic hazards near schools.
2) are they correctly licenced
3) for parents trying to get kids home or pick them up after school it is a nightmare..

There is nothing wrong with kids eating chips/burgers now and then, even Oliver admits that (and has burger recipes in some of his books.

What is wrong is kids eating them every day, and without their parents knowing what they are eating.
