ElQaida in Iraq and its allies said Muslims would be victorious and addressed the pope as "the worshipper of the cross," saying "you and the West are doomed as you can see from the defeat in Iraq, Afghanistan, Chechnya and elsewhere. ... We will break up the cross, spill the liquor and impose the 'jizya' tax, then the only thing acceptable is a conversion (to Islam) or (being killed by) the sword."
Islam forbids drinking alcohol and requires non-Muslims to pay the "jizya" tax, though those who convert are exempt. The tax, sometimes called a head tax, has not been imposed in Muslim nations in about 100 years, though Islamic militant groups have tried to force non-Muslims to pay it on a local level in some countries.
"You infidels and despots, we will continue our jihad (holy war) and never stop until God avails us to chop your necks and raise the fluttering banner of monotheism, when God's rule is established governing all people and nations," said the statement by the Mujahedeen Shura Council, an umbrella organization of Sunni Arab extremist groups in Iraq.

Islam forbids drinking alcohol and requires non-Muslims to pay the 'jizya' tax, though they were exempt if they converted to Islam.or early 20th century, though Islamic militant groups have tried to force non-Muslims to pay it on a local level in some countries.
Another Iraqi extremist group, Ansar al-Sunna, challenged "sleeping Muslims" to prove their manhood by doing something other than "issuing statements or holding demonstrations."
"If the stupid pig is prancing with his blasphemies in his house," the group said in a Web statement, referring to the pope, "then let him wait for the day coming soon when the armies of the religion of right knock on the walls of Rome."
In Iran, supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei used the comments to call for protests against the United States. He argued that while the pope may have been deceived into making his remarks, the words give the West an "excuse for suppressing Muslims" by depicting them as terrorists.
"Those who benefit from the pope's comments and drive their own arrogant policies should be targeted with attacks and protests," he said, referring to the United States.
The anger recalled the outrage earlier this year over cartoons depicting the prophet published by a Danish paper. The caricatures, which Muslims saw as insulting Muhammad, set off large, violent protests across the Islamic world.
So far, protests over the pope's comments have been smaller. However, there has been some violence: Attackers hurled firebombs at seven churches in the West Bank and Gaza Strip over the weekend, and a nun was shot to death in Somalia.
Some 200 Khamenei loyalists in the Syrian capital, Damascus, held a protest Monday at an Islamic shrine, dismissing the pope's apology. "The pope's sorrow was equivocal," read one banner.
Dozens protested outside the Vatican Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, and schools and shops in the Indian-controlled section of Kashmir shut their doors in protest.
"His comments really hurt Muslims all over the world," Umar Nawawi of the radical Islamic Defenders' Front said in Jakarta. "We should remind him not to say such things which can only fuel a holy war."
Islamic countries also asked the U.N. Human Rights Council to examine the question of religious tolerance. Malaysia's foreign minister, Syed Hamid Albar, said Benedict's apology was "inadequate to calm the anger."
In Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood said the anger should not be allowed to hurt ties with the Middle East's Christian minorities. But worries among Christians in the region are high.
Guards have been posted around some churches, and the head of Egypt's Orthodox Coptic Church, Pope Shenouda III, disassociated himself from Benedict's statements.
The Dominican mission in Cairo also criticized Benedict's words, saying he chose a text for his speech that "revived the polemics of the past."
"These comments, seen by many Muslims as hurtful, risk encouraging extremists on all sides," it said in a statement, "and put in danger all the advances in dialogue made in recent decades."

Any faith would be used for violence, any theory for that rely may well be taken up for a reason that finally ends up in violence. Islam itself, in case you learn purely what it says may well be unfavorable to ideas outdoors of itself, purely as Christians may well be the comparable way, whether the Koran does no longer restrict violence virtually as strongly by way of fact the recent testomony of the bible, HOW ever examine out the OT, and how violent that grew to become into, that is all subjective, and easily actual learn on the priority provide you solutions.

Because it was founded by tribal people living in a harsh, desert environment (much like Judaism and Christianity). Have you ever tried living in a desert? I haven't, but I imagine it isn't easy. You find a reliable well or a nice date palm grove and you're going to defend it with all your might. And if you're strong and ruthless and brutal, you'll be able to feed your family (and the ladies will love you -- hence the numerous wives). Every now and then you have to put together an "army" and go out and steal some camels or donkeys. You get my point.
Religions like Hinduism and Buddhism, which evolved in less demanding climates, are generally much more peaceful.

Islam is a Religion of Peace, Love, Humanity & Harmony and also promotes the idea of Universal Brotherhood. and u haven't grasped the idea of dhimmitude, dhimmis are non-Muslims living in a Muslim Society alongside Muslims Peacefully. In such a State, Muslims and non-Muslims are equal in the eyes of the state, in their legal rights, and in every matter of law. Dhimmis are given the right to practice their own religion as they like, and protection of their temples, churches are the responsibility of The State. they are wholly protected by The State as any Muslim. they only have to give Jazyah (property tax) to the govt. just like Muslims give Zaka'at (property tax) to the govt. to be used for the welfare of the poor in the society. Peace to All.

Ok. You threw the first stone.....here's my meteor right back at you....and it's going to hurt you big time.
How can Christians claim that Christiantity is the only true and peaceful religion when it has committed the most sickening of atrocities such as:
1) The rape, murder and butchering of Muslims and Jews during the so-called holy crusades to re-take Jerusalem.
2) The rape, murder and subjugation of the island known today as the Philippines by Spanish friars and conquistadors using the cross and the sword.
3) The conviction and burining at the stake of Joan of Arc by the French Catholics after she brought them countless victories over the English.
4) The burning of innocents during the Salem witch trials by devout Christians because they were suspected of witchcraft (they only owned a black cat).
5) The rape, murder, beatings and dehumanization of the ***** slaves by Protestant and Baptist ministers during the time of slavery in the US of A.
6) The formation of the Ku Klux Klan by white Protestant Christians whose main goal was to murder all non-whites and non-christians.
7) The gassing of 6 million Jews in World War 2 by Adolf Hitler with the secret blessing of the Roman Catholic Church.
8) The genocide of millions of Muslims in Bosnia-Hersegovina. No Christian came to their aid when they were being raped and murdered.
9) The murder of my granparents by their Roman Catholic sons and daughters and the taking of my inheritance by Roman Catholic and other Christian lawyers and interest groups (I was a former Catholic for 33 years when I witnessed the murder of my grandparents through passive involuntary euthanasia.)
Now...what were you saying about the perversity of Islam and the Muslims, you ignorant excuse for a human being?
Unless your religion owes up and apoligizes for it's f-u-c-k -- ups, DON'T YOU DARE SHOVEL THAT S-H-I-T ABOUT ISLAM AND ABOUT MY MUSLIM BROTHERS! CLEAN THE F-U-C-K-I-N-G SKELETONS IN YOUR CLOSET FIRST BEFORE YOU GO ON YOUR WITCH HUNT.

The height of their culture is arguably Persia which ruled from present-day Iran all the way through northern India. They gained their greatest influence behind an army. Suicide was originally a sin but evolved into honorable way to die IF an infidel was taken in death along with the believer.

its hard to say , i think that a religion is known by its followers , so if people say that buddhism is peacefull then its probably becuase buddhist or people practising buddhism are peacefull , so I think the problem is with the followers of islam , and on the hind sight do you beleive such people would change overnight if they became jews or hindus.

Why is any religion the way it is. For that exact reason. Just because it is. Don't sit there like an ignorant prick and ask why a religion is a certain way if you don't like it.

CARL,
ISLAM IS NOT A VIOLENT RELIGION.
IT IS THE BLOODY ISLAMIC FANATICS WHO HAVE THEIR OWN INTERPRETATION OF THE RELIGION WHO ADVOCATE VIOLENCE.
I HAVE LIVED IN THE MIDDLE EAST FOR THE PAST 15 YRS & 90% OF THE MUSLIMS ARE PEACE LOVING. IT IS THE REST OF THEM SCUM THAT IS GIVING A BAD NAME TO THE RELIGION.
& I AM NOT A MUSLIM TO BEGIN WITH.
