Perpetuation of the species, but mostly to fulfill their own needs. You nailed this one!

Excellent question! I think that most people have kids because it takes more action and effort to NOT have them and most people are just to lazy, irresponsible, simple-minded, sex/relationship hungry to make NOT getting pregnant (or getting someone pregnant) a serious priority via conscious actions and decisions. The others have them because they have romantic delusions about parenthood and believe society's lies about how it's just so gratifying and fulfilling. When I was in high school and college my friends were getting knocked up/knocking people up right and left. These were the main two reasons why. The first reason was approximately 80% of people and the 2nd reason was about 18% of people. It's kind of scary when you think about it! There was a final scant amount of people (roughly 2%) who had kids because they really wanted them AND they have no delusions. They knew all of the good, bad and ugly that would be involved. Fortunately for me my own parents were in this category. After researching everything carefully and being married for over 10 years they even consulted a fertility specialist in an attempt to have me, which of course finally happened for them/me.

People have kids for a myriad of reasons. A lot of the time, however, they are selfish reasons. Sometimes, they have them just because they got pregnant and said "Oh, well". It is quite sad really. That is why there are so many neglected and abused children.

I have 2 myself. I had them because I wanted to bring some children into the world that would be loved, well cared for and well educated. I would have had more, but I had to take into account how much it takes to pay for their college education. I can only afford 2.

I love my children more than I love anything or anyone (myself included)! That is why I had them.

Some people don't realize if they really want children, they just think they do and don't actually realize the reality of how difficuilt raising children can be and then when the baby comes, and the parents realize how tough it is, then they kind of give up on them and their kids grow up to be criminals or people with psychological problems.

Some couples have children thinking that having a baby will actually improve their relationship when it sometimes make it worse and eventually ruin the child's life.

What I've observed:
Some couples want to have children, because they love kids.
Some want it, because others have children as well.
Some want it, because their parents or in-laws want grandchildren.
Some want it, because they have too much riches that they got to have children to pass on to.
The Japanese Royal family want a *male* grandchild, because they don't want a female to rule the country.
In China, people prefer to have a male child to carry on their family's surname.
Too many *reasons* to have a child is treating children as *things* rather than as *humans*
Things are for possession.
Humans are for loving.

At the time of conception, children are the last thing on your mind. Every one has their own reasons for having children.

I didn't want kids. Now I have 3. My daughter swore she wouldn't have kids unless they were an accident and she's now pregnant with her first. My sister didn't want to have kids. She has 2. My parents never expressed whether or not they wanted kids and they had 5.

*I* believe that there are actually people who have them 'cos they feel as if there's no turning back and that they do what's expected of them...

Oh, one more thing, although *I* would never do it over again, I wouldn't change a thing. I love my kids dearly, but *you* tell them that! (g)

And bear in mind, a lot of people feel the way I do when they're totally honest. A sleeping child is the most precious thing in the world, but you take that same child who was screaming a mile a minute in a public location just a few hours before...

Nothing in life is guaranteed and, good or bad, you learn to work with what you got.

it's a natural thing, if they didn't there would be no one left,of course people have children because they love them...but others have them because they think they are in love with the father or it is a good way to get him. So I guess it goes both ways. I had mine because I loved their father and wanted to have kids to carry on our legacy..

Why do people have children? I mean, this is a bizarre question I think. We have to have them to procreate. To keep the human race alive. I think most people have children so they can experience the joy of parenthood and raising a child who is in fact a combination of them and their lover. It is really a beautiful thing, I think. When I have children, I will not have tehm for the fulfillment of my own needs, I will do it because I love my husband and want to share that part of life with him. That is the epitome of expressing one's love for another person (when it is not by accident or just a one night stand of course.)
