It knows. I agree with peeka bo, mess with an irate toaster at your own risk. It has infinite power and control over the quality of your morning. Burnt toast, one side black, one side white, dried out bread ,crispy Pop Tarts, limp waffles, the ways it can control are endless. Be careful, LOL :)
In other words, I do not know, I have been careless and accidently put the toast in the wrong slot, it came out of the taoster the same as if I had put it in the correct slot.

Stick your finger in the slot and feel around to see if there a difference in the two slots. Wait!!!!! That may not be a good idea. Maybe there a Sensor on one side and not the other, just look may be the better thing to do, no need toasting your finger. Unplug it when you look.

Toasters are a lot smarter than you give them credit for.
You don't wanna mess with a "pissed off" toaster so I suggest you do as it say's.
