Not all children are interested in doing extra things, and you should respect his decision not to. If it's because he's not a good socializer, than maybe giving him an extra push would be good. If he's getting picked on at school and doesn't want to spend anymore time with the kids than what he has to, then don't make him. Chances are, the kids are still going to regardless of if he's in a club or not. If he just needs some extra things to do because he's getting in trouble or you just think it could help him blossom and make friends, then make him choose one from a list, and do what you can to make him go. If his grades start slipping when he starts to go, then pull him out because it may be too much stress for him to deal with. And whatever is decided, just let him know you support him and don't get angry when he doesn't want to join anything.

WOO HOO, this is a interesting question.
Me, myself, is in at least seven clubs. there are reasons why he should join:
1) stay with his friends (big one)
2) community services hours
3) better looking on the transcript
4) learn better social skills

if these doesn't work, do it this way:
1) show him there are lot of advantages for being in a club
a) what he can get from a club (candy, gift cards)
b) become an officer (get respect)
b i.) when you are an officer, you get power to do things and make decision.

hope these help.

Best way is to find out what he likes doing the most rather than forcing him to do something for which he is not comfortable.
le us say he likes drama more than music his chances of being happy will be more in drama. Eventually you will also become happier. So find what he likes doing the most and then motivat him in a positive direction.
