a hospital pharmacy most of the time deals with the monetary transaction within your total hospital bill. The hospital pharmecy is another service the hospital provides which is added to your bill

at the retail pharmacy you must get a doctor's prescription to get your medicine, where as in the hospital the doctor's orders are sent straight to the in-hospital pharmacy so you can leave with your meds

hope this helps :)

My brother has been a Pharmacist for many years and worked in both areas. Right now he is in the hospital pharmacy. I know the difference for him was not dealing with the general public which can be a total hassle in the retail world. Alot of the people that come in to the retail pharmacy are, of course, older people. Try dealing with them all day, complaining about prices, not understanding if they dont have a refill coming they need to get it authorized by their doctor, so many hassles and complaints!!
in the hospital setting, you wont get half the grief. just a note-i have nothing against older people!!! but I deal with my 95 yr old grandma and all of her pharmacy issues.

There should be little difference. Pharmacies may vary depending on their clientele. A hospital pharmacy may stock more drugs used by hospitalized patients. A retail pharmacy may have more stock for chronic conditions.

having worked both (hospital 11 years, retail 7 years) I could write a book.
What specifically are you after?

By the way, I read the other answers. The word 'clueness' comes to mind.

HOSPITAL PHARMACY IS ONE WITHIN HOSPITAL PREMISES AND WILL DELIVER EVERY MEDICINE PRESCRIBED, BY ITS DOCTORS. THE RETAIL PHARMACIST STOCKS, MOST OF THE MEDICINES, ESPECIALLY THE ONES USUALLY PRESCRIBED BY THE DOCTORS IN THE VICINITY. HE WILL ALSO TAKE CARE-OFF THE HIS REGULAR CUSTOMERS REQUEST AND WILL STOCK THERE REGULAR NEEDS. THE HOSPITAL PHARMACY DOES NOT DO THIS. BUT WILL ALSO DELIVER SUCH SPECIAL HOSPITAL REQUIREMENTS, SUCH AS GLUCOSE INT-RA-VENOUS INJECTION BOTTLES, OXYGEN, ETC.
