Too much, when a person is not accustomed to caffeine, can make a person jumpy and irritable, and shakey, same as withdrawing from it. and too much at the wrong time can mess with sleep patterns, and cause insomnia. The need of regular doses of caffeine for an addict causes the same
Current medical wisdom is a little is OK, and are saying coffee contains substances that are beneficial.
Some early enough in the day so its effects wear off before time of sleep is OK.
It is my opinion that caffeine is a drug, and should be treated as such. I'm sure the coffee and soda manufacturer's do not share that opinion.

Caffeine is a drug that in large amounts, especially over an extended period of time, can lead to a condition termed "caffeinism." Caffeinism usually combines physical addiction with a wide range of unpleasant physical and mental conditions including nervousness, irritability, anxiety, tremulousness, muscle twitching (hyperreflexia), insomnia and heart palpitations.
Wikipedia really has good info about it...! It almost makes me scary - and I think I will not drink coffee so much anymore. Its bad for you!
Oh, and did you know that there is caffeine in tea aswell! Yes, that is true... so only herbal tea is good, without caffeine.

Caffeine, which is a mild and addictive drug, is normally
found in coffee. If you drink about 4 to 5 cups of coffee every
day for many years (at least 3 years), you're bound to suffer
health problems relating to your heart, erratic blood pressure,
nerves system and insomnia (sleeplessness).
Thus, it's very bad for those people who drink coffee regularly and also in large quantities. The old saying goes, "everything
you eat or drink should be done in moderation".

Too much of anything isn't good for you. Too much caffeine can cause a person to be jumpy, irriatable, lose sleep and concentration.

well it makes your heart rate and blood pressure go irratic. Small doses aren't that harmfull but in the long run it ain't too good.
Try using a heart rate monitor while drinking coffee you'll soon understand what I mean.
