it's basically a mix of all THREE. depression is caused by biological factors (such as an imbalance of chemicals to the brain), environmental factors, and yes, diet. only your doctor can give u insight as to where your particular depression comes from. i had this same question as you a few weeks ago. so, it can be caused by all three (either at the same time, or one at a time)

Many causes, each case is different. Depression can come as a side effect of a physical illeness in many instances. for example, thyroid disease or a hormonal imbalance after giving birth, or recovering from cancer (going through chemotherapy). It can be a result of an emotional trauma, for example, after the death of a loved one, sexual abuse, etc... It can be induced or aggravated by substances such as alcohol or certain medication. It is believed to have a genetic component so that if it runs in your family, you can be predisposed to it. It can be environmental, your life circumstances induce it, for example being incarcerated, or in an abusive relationship.
If you suspect depression, is best to first have a thorough physical exam to rule out any disease causing it, discuss your diet withyour doctor and if everything looks normal and you still have been feeling depressed for more than 3 months or are having suicidal thoughts, ask for a psych referral!!!
Sometimes therapy alone can help ( when you find a good therapist), other times, medication is most advisable or a combination. Each person is different so don;t go by how your friend or family member did to get over it!

Everybody gets depressed now and then, usually because something sad or miserable happens. A normal person will bounce back. A clinically depressed person will not. In fact, a clinically depressed person doesn't really need a reason to be depressed.
Neuro-transmitters between brain neurons are generally the culprit in clinical depression. It often has a genetic link, and it can be more pronounced as a person deals with outside circumstances. It can also be caused by misuse of drugs, lack of sleep, or ill-health.
Depression isn't generally considered an emotion. Most depressed people are really quite emotionally detached.
There's plenty of info on the net. Stick to the .org's and .edu's when doing searches, or you'll get stuck with a lot of useless snake oil remedies.

When I suffered from it in high school, it was a combination of many things. An adverse social situation (my environment) wasn't great. I didn't have many friends at my fancy college prep school. Plus I have a medical predisposition for mental illness (at least depression, anxiety disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorder) from both sides of my family. Some of my relatives have wrestled with these issues. Primarily, for me, it was a matter of sorting out an effective SSRI medication that would regulate the serotonin in my brain. After that hurdle was crossed, the rest began to fall into place as I gained control. My advice to you if you are suffering from depression is first talk to friends, family, or trusted colleague. If that does not help, consult a physician. Good luck! It can be overcome with the correct treatments.

Depression is thought to be a chemical imbalance in the brain with serotonin there is medication to help even these imbalances out. You have to understand that there are many different levels of depression there is the manic which is where you become very happy and then very low and depressed. or there can be situational depression where you become depressed from a certain change in your life, maybe a move, menstural cycle, etc. I hope this helped answer you question.

All could contribute. For some it runs in families (though some argue that it's the dysfunctional thinking patterns that are passed down and contribute to developing depression)... diet... lack of sunshine... just being pessimistic and not regulating your thinking. It's hard to say for certain what causes it... as it depends from situation to situation. But I would say it's a combination of factors.

It's a combination of a lot of things. Someone could have suffered a miserable childhood, have a deficiency of serotonin levels in their brain, or both. I personally think the body and mind are connected, and if you have a prolonged or severe enough problem with one, you're going to develop a problem with the other.

it is generally hereditary so your genes predispose a person to depression but a combination of factors like extreme food deprivation, diet, emotional stress, and tragic events may trigger it. see a psychiatrist if you are depressed. cheers!
