The worst thing you can do is not get it trimmed. Get your hair trimmed every 8-10 wks. by a stylist you trust and tell them you only want 1/4 to half an inch off. Hair grows approximately half an inch a month, so if you wait 8 wks. and only get half an inch trimmed you'll still have gained half an inch. Don't buy cheap crap from walmart or anything. Get professional products, they are the best. All the crap on the counters is 40-60% water, compared to professional which is 40-60% product. Make sure your hair is fully saturated, and a little goes a LONG way. If it''s not lathering and getting soapy, try to get your hair a little more wet, if that still doesn't work, it doesn't mean it's not working you may just have hard water which makes shampoo not lather, or a build up on your hair. And if you can't afford professional from a salon, try getting something from Sally's Beauty Supply, or your local beauty salon supply store, it's better than the crap on the shelves at walmart.

you should get a trim, just an inch, long hair is so aweful when it is in poor condition. i can never understand why people would do that. but yes hot oil treatments are good, i use them and you can get them from the supermarket, you just put them in a cup of boiling water for 5 mins and slap it on!
but seriously.... get a trim, it will look so much better

You need to get the real stuff! Excellent reconstructive conditioners are # 1. K-Pak Reconstructor by Joico (the very best!)
#2. Soy Salvation by Sexy Hair Concepts. Both found in salon retailers.
A good hairdresser would just nip the ends or 1/2", to keep it healthy and get rid of the split ends, so they don't travel up the hair shaft.

if you have split ends all over, jst getting them trimmed won't help! After the hot oil treatment.. keep them wrapped in a warm towel for atleast 30 minutes.... then wash and go in for a deep conditioning....
After that... you need to condition them regularly for healthy hair

I have long hair to. And about every 8 months or so when the split ends are getting out of hand i go and get about 3 in. cut. People can't even tell that my hair is shorter, but it looks much better.

You can't fix damage. No product can fix split ends, only make them look better. You need to get a trim and use quality products on your hair to prevent further damage.
