Actually the pope was giving a discourse on inter-religion dialogue and this unfortunate reference to a medieval Emperor's comments (not the Pope's) regarding Islam while the Emperor was under attack by the Ottoman Turks was made within the context of that discourse.
Agree that we should all respect and care for each other. But just as the Church has been wrong during the Crusades (against Muslim-held land) and during the early colonial days, similarly Islam has done 'conquest by the sword) during the middle-age Golden period across North Asia.
In today's context, what the Pope cited, although not done tactfully, could be used by today's Muslim Theologians to help the Muslim followers review why religiously-endorsed violence (arising from past interpretation and application of teachings) may need to be softened and made applicable to today's democratic and informed world.
May we have more peace among mankind.

No Muslim leader has ever insulted Christianity?
Oh my goodness. I don't even know where to start with that.
Do me a favor. Look up this name: Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. He's the President of Iran and he certainly counts as a high-ranking Muslim. See what he's said about Christianity and Judaism. It's so hateful that it's appalling. He fancies himself the last imam.
Also, allow me to remind you that Osama (certainly a high-ranking official of the sect Al-Qaeda) recently said that all "Followers of the Cross" will be "destroyed. He promises world domination, death and disorder.
And the Pope wasn't the author of the comment in question. He was quoting someone else, in context. Here's the quote:
"Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.”
- Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Paleologus
Please do some research next time.

We can not say which one is better Islam or Pope, because Islam is God's religion for muslims and Pope is a humanbeing that is now a top leader for all Christians especially Catholics in this world. That is not comparable. But I think Pope made a speech with a hatred heart to muslims although his religion or based on loves.Yes most of muslim leaders did not insult Christians and other religion followers and its religion teaching, because we should say good to others and appreciate or respect other religion without blaming each other. We wish a peaceful situation and love and help each other in the same religion and with other religion because we all simililar as humanbeings who are created by our God as descendants of Adam and Eve.We are brothers and sisters whatever our religion is different. In the eyes of God we are the same ,the difference lies only on our faith and our obedient to our God's insructions and prohibitions..We should treat well our enemies. We should not retaliate others who have made bad or wrong accusation to us.We do not hate them,we should treat them with love..They should bear their own bad doings to Allah the only one God.We appreciate and respect all prophets including Jesus and we acknowledge also their holy book.We can not retaliate insulting with insulting if we could avoid satans temptation.

All religions are flawed and man-made. The Pope quoted something about Islam being a violent religion. Muslims just proved the quote to be true as they destroted churches and murdered a nun.

Islam's teachings are Mohammad's 1) Convert 2) Enslave 3) or Kill philosophy. Where as Jesus' teachings are all about LOVE. Do the math.

Why doesn't the Islams forgive the pope. Many Islams are calling for revenge against the Pope but this taking revenge is evil too. There are many more Islams being unkind towards the Pope.

Islam.
I'm a Muslim and had forgiven the Pope. So are many other top ranking Muslims. But these people don't get the media attention as it should. Only the terrorist and the misguided Muslims get the limelight.

I'm not a real big fan of either. I'm a christian who doesn't believe there should be a hierarchy like the one set up by the Roman pagan Constantine in 300 A.D. The head of the church should be the pastor and the only one above a pastor should be the Trinity

because when something happens like the cartoons in denmark... or the pope saying something..... muslims go ape shitte.... they kill people and burn things.... and have rallies..... when an azhole puts a cross in a jar of urine, catholics didn't burn the brooklyn museum down... they just wrote letters.... they didn't cut off the artist head.
I don't respect a religion that teaches their kids to hate other people just because they are jews or infidels... i don't belive in a religeon that is still stuck in the 9th century.... they need a reformation and quickly... the moderate muslim must speek out against the radicals..... but that doesn't happen... because secretly they are for the radicals....
