the pistol is for my wife, and even if i get her a .357 it will fire 38's 99% of the time. I dont want to spend over $275 or so,in case she looses interest. i dont need it for home defense...thats the berretta's job.her criteria is "shiney" and not to muzzle heavy and light recoil(9mm recoil or less).

I don't know where you live but gun shows are sometimes a good place to find an 'economical' gun with a guarantee. Deal with reputable people who come back every year/quarter. At a gun show you get to see lots of different items. And on the last day, maybe even a good deal.

For wife .38 Special will be fine. You might look for a model with a protected hammer or an internal hammer so as not to get caught on something in her purse or other womanly things.

Only danger in teaching your woman to shoot a pistol is, will she ever get mad enough at me to use it in my general direction.

If it is for your wife's introduction to handguns, the Taurus 5- or 6-shooters may be ideal considering the price. However, if it is for serious self-defense, I wouldn't compromise. I will always get the reliable best. Save your money instead and buy a Smith and Wesson. There are many styles to choose from and you will be getting a quality gun for life. I own a S&W combat magnum with a 2 and 1/2-inch barrel in stainless steel. It works everytime.

Bound's hubby here:

I am partial to the Smith & Wesson revolvers. I have handled Rugers, I've handled Colts, I have handled Smith & Wessons, but I have not handled revolvers of other make. What I have found is that the Smith & Wessons have the best trigger systems. Trigger pulls are light, crisp, consistent, and safe. A good trigger pull is critical to an accurate shot. Product support and customer service is outstanding.

I have one Smith... it dates back to 1957, it has never been in the shop for service or tuning. It is extremely accurate, as if it had just come out of the box.

Since cost is a concern, you can get excellent police trades at a greatly reduced price, just pick up an issue of Shotgun News. Your gun dealer friend could really assist you in getting a super revolver at a fantastic price this way. My personal recommendation would be either a Smith & Wesson Model 66, Model 67 or Model 686.

Good luck.

I really like the Rugers, Very easy to clean, Accurate, Durable and the resale value is good. The Ruger GP100 (6 shot) can be had in 3-4-6 inch barrels. The Ruger SP101 (5shot) can be had in 2 or 3 inch barrels in .357

Taurus is a good brand, though the older models tend to have a better track record in my opinion. They are accurate, not as easy to clean as the Rugers, and tend to have problems with their springs being weak. Be prepared to order a replacement spring kit. Their Tracker series seems to be the exception to this.

Lana is right on as is dg. Ruger and Taurus are good, available in various barrel lengths and stainless or blue steel. And of course, Ruger is American made.

I don't know what to tell you about the EAA Windicator. I've never actually seen or handled one but photos indicate that it is a nice double action, heavy duty .357 Mag. revolver.

Personally, I'm partial to Rugers. American made, and always a reasonable price. Top quality too. An underappreciated pistol is the Rossi (made by Taurus, lower price point). I had a snub .357 Magnum, which of course handled the lighter .38 Special loads, and it was good. And shiny.

ok the word budget automatically eliminates smith and wesson from the choices. taurus is an awesome gun, very cheap, reliable. i have a really small one that is a .38 (model 85CH) and i know they make one just like it in .357. it has a 2 inch barrel, and it is a really nice gun. as for the windicator, its a decent gun for the really cheap price. just go all out and get a taurus raging bull .454 with 8 3/8 inch barrel.

I own a Ruger GP100 .357 magnum SS and its a great handgun. I did my research and found that this is built like a tank - meaning it can handle the magnum loads all day long. I bought it new for under $500 and its 100% reliable and safe. The guns you're looking at run around $200 but to be honest, I would be a little skeptical to fire a hot .357 mag out of them.

Try Rossi, EAA..........Cobra enterprise, and Hi-Point make good low cost semi-autos. I have a the cobra CA-380AUTO and I love it. My semi took some breaking in to get it to function right (yes the manufacturer advised me of this and it worked). Some people will tell you to only get the high priced stuff but like you I'm on a budget. If you like the higher priced stuff sometimes you can find one for a good price but it'll be used. My cobra cost 120.00 and after some feed problems, contacting the company, doing what they said no more problems. But most of the Cobra and Hi-Point guns cost less than 150.00 some get into the 200.00 range but they are just as reliable as the more expensive stuff if taken care of.
