Do you know what I am talking about? I swear they are impossible to get rid of once they are in your document.
And they multiply! Please help! It is ruining a piece of work I have spent so much time on. They are the horizontal lines that "attach" themselves to sections of text. I've tried the help menu, but since I don't know what the F$^# they are, no use.

They are SOLID, straight, horizontal lines that run the width of the page and haunt your writing. Try pressing --- [Enter] and you will see what I am talking about.

They aren't punctuation lines.

Ugh, none of this is working : ( I have tried all of your great suggestions. I am wondering if they are for something else? Or if my Word is just stupid...although my friends insist that these lines are death to any paper that gets them.

And, thanks to the smarmy dude with the Mac. I really appreciate your helpful suggestion the night before my project is due and I have stupid lines in my paper.

Those annoying lines are either misspellings or suggestions that your punctuation or grammar is wrong. I'm running the beta of Word 2007, so I can't find the exact location to send you to, but there is an option to turn these off or on. It is probably under Tools->Options. There should be about 10 tabs to pick from, but you should be able to figure out which one has the options you're looking for. Good luck...

1. Open MS-Word

2. look at the Standard toolbar. For this you can turn-off all the other tool bars if you want

3. If the button just before the page zoom level is in pressed state then press click it once more, you can view a tool tip that starts with "show/hide"

4. Try to press enter in your document whether you get that symbol or not

It doesn't happen on a Mac. Sorry!

Do they show in your print outs? If not, then you can turn off the formatting marks by clikcing the paragraph symbol tab on the formatting toolbar. Don't know what they are if they are showing up in print-outs though.
