i don't think there is an appropriate term in the english language. i've given it much thought as well, and i had to compromise with 'my man' (i know it's not the best, but compared to boyfriend???)

Sister, you have hit the nail on the head.
I have been with a woman for the past six years, and I have finally given in and started calling her my wife, even though we are not legally married, and in fact she is married to someone else, but separated. "My Man" might be appropriate, as is "My Fella" and/or "My Beau." The French would probably say, "ma petit amie" or "ma melliur amie", which means "my little friend" and "my better friend" respectively. The problem I had, and I'm sure this is what you are going through, is that there is no specific word that can be used, unless you want to use, "lover," but I don't want to assume that you do. I used that one for awhile early in the relationship and got some strange looks indeed.
Anyway, hope this helps. Keep up the good relationship work and all.

I think any or all your choose such as Bf, partner or signifigant other would be fine. My mother is 48 and she has a Boyfriend. My father is 66 and he has a Signifigant other....
And my guy friend is 34 he has a partner. I think partner suits better if your both the same sex. None of them seem cold to me. I dont think its what you call him, but more of how you call him it.

I would use his name and profession if I were you. Like "Hi, this is John, he's an instructor at the driving school". Then go on to say what your relationship is with him like "We have been going out for a year & a half now". The other person will understand that you are in a relationship & it is not decided as to how far down the line towards marriage you are or early for that matter.

I'm in the same boat!! I tend to introduce my b/f as my better half in jest or when introducing to new colleagues / friends he doesn't know. You could also try: Life partner in the making...
or My partner in crime, Good luck - i'd be really interested in seeing all the other ideas given..

Just introduce him as your friend. Who cares what people think what is important is how you two feel when you are together not what firneds, coworkers or family think about your friendship

I dont think you are ever to old to use the phrase boyfriend. It signifys that he is the guy in your life. This is my man is not bad also. Boyfriend - cant really go wrong.

Hmm, well I use the term partner, although I agree it is a bit sterile.
Better Half? De Facto? 'my man'?
