They have been compared to "grains of rice" but in my opinion, they are a little flatter and a bit longer (when they stretch). You can see them in your cats feces or they can look like sesame seeds around your cats anal area (if I said that right). My cat just had this problem last week. I bought some tapeworm tabs from Pet Co (about $20 for 3 pills) and they are now gone. You can also take your cat to the vet if you don't want to administer the pills. I recommend taking care of this very quickly. Also, if your cat has fleas, I also recommend a visit to your local groomers, then follow up with Front line to keep the fleas away. Tapeworm develops after your cat has swallowed a flea. Good luck to you and your kitty. Oh and P.S. tapeworms can be transmitted to US if WE swallow a flea. Chances of that happening are HIGHLY unlikely.

Tapeworms in cats look like sort of flat rice grains that can move under their own power. You may see them on the stool or crawling around the anal area or the fur nearby. Tapeworms can infest any warm blooded animal, but transmission to humans is rare, unless your hygiene is horrible.
You can now buy tapeworm medicine over the counter in pet stores like Petco and Petsmart and online as well. If you are sure they are tapeworms, you need to get the wormer meant for tapeworms as the round worm medicine simply won't work. The first infestation might better be diagnosed by a vet if you aren't sure.
The medicine is expensive, but very effective, but to keep the tapeworms away, you need effective flea control as well. The fleas are part of the tapeworm lifecycle and the cat will be reinfested unless you also get rid of the fleas.

You are after all on a very fabulous piece of equipment that has lost it's popularity with one of it's best uses....learning. Go to the yahoo main page, above the search bar there are selection tabs: web, image, video, audio ect. Click on image, and search for tape worm. Many pictures will come at you giving you a fabulous idea af what it looks like AND as a bonus if you click on an image it will take you to the web site it is posted on and there you will be able to find more information on the tape worm

It depends how close you are to your cat ... as long as you don't allow the animal on kitchen counters or other places food is eaten and prepared, groom your cat with your tongue, or share a litterbox your chances of catching it should be low.
A tapeworm is long, whitish and kinda 'thread like'. What you may be seeing is small rice shapped creature, white in color that kinda oozes itself along. If that is what your seeing it has to do with fleas.
But take the cat to the vets so it can get dewormed and get a perscription for Advantage.

Whoa! They can get really long. Look for a pale color & a kinda segmented pattern (these can break off & become a new worm)' I think yapeworms can go anywhere they like as long as the situation is encouraging.....
