If the wattage of the speakers is exceeded than the sound will be distorted at the least If too much power is applied to low wattage speakers they can actually blow.

The higher the wattage of the speaker, the more power the speakers can handle. It has little to do with how well they sound, or the quality level of the speakers.
Look at the build quality and the sound quality -and voila!

No it's not, high wattage doesn't guarantee a better sound quality or even a louder sound.
Speaker is far more complicated than that. There must be a balanced and integration of the components in the speakers. Expensive Big power components doesn't always means good sound.
Maybe you can think of the speaker wattage like your car's engine. Usually car bigger displacement engine is faster , but not always. It depends on the design and the technolgy they used.

I'll confirm the last two answers: power in a speaker has nothing to do with quality. It is basically a safety spec: the max power a speaker will handle without burning out. In most speakers, your ears will burn out before the speaker does. The most important specs are frequency range, frequency response smoothess, total distortion, resonance frequencies, ringing characteristics and overshoot, etc. Unfortunately, for consumer-level speakers, these specs are never mentioned.

Whoever said it doesn't know what he's talking about.
Quality is a matter of design principles, quality of components, low distortion, selection of materials, well-designed crossover, time and phase alignment, etc.
How many ohms, how many watts, how big, these things mean nothing.
