Easy. It's called the 'flight or fight' instinct. It's basic instinct to run away or fight when something pops out at us, and when we jump, our body is setting us up to either run away or fight.

Not all jump. I freeze and cry (so if I was in real trouble, I'd be dead) but my husband punches first. It is whatever our first instinct dictates.
