Begin your puppy on a strict feeding routine, from the first night..Feed him about an hour before bedtime, and walk him 5-10 minutes later, until he pees and poops..Praise him and cheerfully take him back in..Play with him for the next 20 minutes or so, until he's tired.. He may whine some, but will likely sleep until morning..Puppies should be fed 4 times a day at first, following the routine above..then gradually reduce to 3 times per day...I leave water down at all times, as puppies dehydrate so quickly..
His bowels will move quicker if you warm his food, and he will fall asleep easier..

Hopefully the pup is at least 8 weeks old. He/she is scared and lonely and tired, about the change. Don't get him too stressed out. Hopefully you've had the for sight to buy a crate or get at least a box. Add a nice warm (NOT HOT) fluffy towel or blanket, out of the dryer. Let him eat 3-4 hours before going to bed, remember babies have small stomachs, Just like with a human baby if you jump every time he cries, YOU"RE setting up the problem.
With my pups I leave the TV or radio on in the room with them. And don't get up with them during the night. Baby proof the area you decide on. You know no plugs, cords, dangerous stuff.
Also my mom just got a Westie and placed a soft safe snugly stuffed animal in with Heidie and it really worked. Above all RELAX remember it's a dog and will pick up on your every cue-----NERVOUSNESS LOVE is the main thing your little guy/girl will want....

You are in for a TREAT! There is no worst night than the first with a new pup, lol. In all honesty, the best t hing to do is put him/her in a crate with an absorbent blanket and shut the door. They will cry all night regardless of what you do other than put it in bed with you. If you choose the bed route, plan on getting up every 2-3 hours to take it outside... no matter how ya look at it, you're not getting any sleep the first couple nights!

yor pup is gonna explore, be a little nervous and then (if he is a toy like a mini pinscher like my friends) when he gets used to you, he'll CONSTANTLY jump on your bed because he likes it there better, let im sleep in a basket on o next to your bed, one so he'll get used to you and your scent and two so then he can feel welcomed and protected, besides if he doesn't sleep there, he will cry, or if he already got used to you and all like my bro's Pittbull, he wont have no problem just let him sleep on your bed with thoses super absorent pads from Wammart, real good and cheap! By the way, IT ROCKS TO GET A NEW PUPPY! CONGRATS!

The first night with a puppy. oh i remember the day....
You have to set up your house properly before you get him. first of all, puppies can get overwhelmed if they have too much space. The first night you need to keep their crate in your room right next to their bed with a favorite toy of theirs or a ticking clock covered in cloth.
The travel home can be trumatic. the first thing you need to do as soon as you get them home is give them a bathroom break. Either on a designated spot in the puppies "area" like a litterbox or a wee-wee pad, or a small spot on your lawn...which will be his potty spot. As soon as he/she assumes the position(sniffing the ground and squatting/lifting his leg), say "Go potty" or "Hurry up" which you should use as his trigger word. Potty training must begin immediately, though you need to realize that puppies under 14 weeks do not have the ability to hold their bladder for more than 2-3 hours.
Show him where his food and water dishes will be, and encourage him to drink...but don't offer food at this time. Give him several hours to explore your house, not allowing strangers in your house on the first night. brief all children on proper puppy behavior. make the kids sit down before handling the puppy, as they tend to squirm.
Don't let your dog sleep with you the first night, as this can set a bad precedent. but keep the dog crate by your bed. so if it's whining you can reach your hand over to comfort it.
If the puppy whimpers, it's either to let it out to go to the bathroom or because it's lonely. Don't give it water after 7pm and give it a bathroom break immediately preceding putting it in the crate. Your first few nights will be sleepless, and yes you can expect a few accidents. my advise is don't put newspaper in the crate, as this encourages him to poop in his crate if you plan on paper training, but if you get a precision crate, it comes with a removable plastic bottom you can clean easily. Don't put a bed in until you're sure he won't soil it.
To answer your question about how often you'll have to get up, once every 2 or 3 hours. take him outside or to his wee-wee pad for about 5 minutes and if he goes, praise him and take him back in immediately. reward him with praise in his crate. (if your pee pad training him, if he wanders off the pad, say nothing and put him back on the pad until he goes, or for about 15 minutes)

It will be like having a new toy but better cause this one doesn't die out of energy. It will most likely pace back & forth all night long and do sad pouting like sounds till he/she gets familiar with the new home and people. You possibly wouldn't sleep too well either knowing that you don't wan't to see anything happen to it while you are sleeping. Good luck. All that is normal, you'll both be just find.

I have been told that a puppy can hold it one hour for every month it is old: 1 mo- 1 hr, 2 mo-2 hr. etc. I have raised a lot of dogs and find the to be fairly true. I wouldn't teach with a potty pad. I did that with my youngest dog. we still have issues with going in the house. He is going on three!
and good luck. they are so fun:)

Your puppy will probably cry all night because it will miss its "mommy" Try to make the puppy as comfortable as possible, and in no time at all it will get used to your family routine! Good luck, and have fun with your puppy!

Be prepared to get up every two hours. Lots of whining if it misses its littermates. Worth every minute. Are you prepared with a crate that is large enough for the dog to stand up and turn around in? That way, especially at night, it will whine to go out. Enjoy your new pup.
