Jesus is refering to the Holy Spirit; the third person of the Holy Trinity.
HOLY TRINITY is: A term used since A.D. 200 to denote the central doctrine of the Christian religion. God, who is one and unique in his infinite substance or nature, is three really distinct persons, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The one and only God is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Yet God the Father is not God the Son, but generates the Son eternally, as the Son is eternally begotten. The Holy Spirit is neither the Father nor the Son, but a distinct person having his divine nature from the Father and Son by eternal procession. The three divine persons are co-equal, co-eternal, and consubstantial and deserve co-equal glory and adoration.
We need to know how we are created in God's image to grasp the concept of the Holy Trinity and I think your question is a good one.
To understand this better chart it out or use a diagram of two triangles of equal proportions like the Star of David. This allows an easier understanding of the relationship between the Essence and Existence of a thing. The words following should be distinguished in the following categories: Physical, Mental, and Spiritual. These three words encompass everything in the Universe and make up the CREATIVE PROCESS to help describe the Creator, creatures, and creation.
God is spirit. He cannot be seen. If you were to examine all the creatures, the CREATOR has made a pattern emerges: angels and demons are intellectual creatures without a body; plants and animals do not have an intellect but a body and mortal soul. IT IS ONLY LIVING, HUMAN, BEINGS, that have a MIND, BODY, and SOUL. Only human beings have all three. Now, living, human, being is the existence of man. Those words describe the essence of man's mind, body, and soul. The Body is living, the Mind makes us human and distinguishing us from animals, and our Soul makes us the being that we become (good or evil).
Now, even Muslims will agree Allah is omnipotent (all powerful), omniscient (all knowing), and omnipresent (ever present). These words describe the existence of God. So, what is the essence of God? I will hold off answering this question till the end.
Now, if you think about the existence of a person they have a triple existence: physical (body), mental (mind), and spiritual (eternal soul). In fact, whenever we create something it has all three of these parts. When we cook we have a recipe (in our mind), we gather all the raw ingredients, and we cook (don't burn it, ha ha) what it is we are making. Cooking has the physical, mental, and spiritual parts. Same with engineering or technology it has three parts: the blueprints (to convey an idea), the raw materials (physical), and the workmanship (spiritual). If something goes wrong investigators will look for a design flaw, material flaw, or faulty workmanship. THIS DEMONSTRATES CREATION HAS THREE PARTS LIKE THE CREATOR.
Now, in the Bible it says Jesus is the visible likeness of the invisible God. (Colossians 1:15) The ESSENCE OF GOD IS: Father (mental), Son (physical), Holy Ghost (spiritual). ONE TRUE GOD IN THREE JUST LIKE A PERSON. THREE PARTS ONE PERSON. When you are sick you send for a doctor; when you are mentally troubled, a psychiatrist; when spiritually seeking you seek out a holy person.

Why would a Spirit not be a Person? In fact, this is a reference to the Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Trinity. Remember that the word 'person' derives from the greek 'persona', meaning mask. It referred to the mask worn by Greek actors to denote the character that the actor was playing. Using this method, one actor could play several parts. This is what God has done with the Father, Son and Spirit. Three parts. One God.

Misterious,
Well you see, the reason wqhy there are so many that believe in something called a trinity is because the Bible indicates that in many places. It's not that we have accepted some doctrine from a council, or decided to listen to aperson though we had noting scriptural to rely on. That verse and others like it show us that there is a father and a Son, and a Holy Spirit, but somehow they are one. Is that the trinity? It is to many people. What is it to me? The closest I've heard to how to describe God's nature, but still inaccurate.
I really hope that cleared it up to you. The man Jesus was talking about the Spirit of God, and what He was going to do.

Okay, here's another translation...
This passage is talking about the Holy Spirit.
John 12:12-14
12 "I have many more things to say to you, but they are too much for you now. 13 But when the Spirit of truth comes, he will lead you into all truth. He will not speak his own words but he will speak only what he hears and he will tell you what is to come. 14 The Spirit of truth will bring glory to me because he will take what I have to say and tell you.
Jesus was saying that there much more that needs to be said, but He doesn't want to overwhelm us. He will send the Spirit of truth (Holy Spirit) and the Holy Spirit will bring glory to Jesus by what is said.
So, "he" is the Holy Spirit, that is...the Spirit of God.
Hope that helps!
Grace to you and God Bless!

Great Question! This section of the Gospel of John has the nickname "Jesus' graduation address." Meaning Jesus knew the time of his crucifixion was at hand. This multi-chapter message was a way of telling his closest disciples that while he was leaving that they would not be alone, would be intimately cared for by the Holy Spirit, and would continue on in powerful ministry.
The "he" that Jesus refers to was the Holy Spirit--or the spirit of Jesus himself. While Jesus was going to be with the Father in Heaven he would send "another" who would represent him perfectly, empower followers of Christ to do His will, and continue to build his work and church when Jesus was gone.
In the verse you mention above Jesus says that the main role of the Holy Spirit was to "take of mine," meaning the thoughts, intention and very presence of Jesus, and "give it to you," Meaning give those very thing to the followers of Jesus. As they took those things--both directly from the Spirit and from the Bible--where the Spirit guides them into truth--they would live lives that look like Jesus, leading to his glory.
If you look at the context of not only John 14, but also, and especially John 16, "he" refers to the Holy Spirit. I don't think you can interpret it any other way.

He's talking about another Messiah there's 3 including the Original, the second one is the one that's supposed to come like now and is the One publicized as the Anti Christ when in fact Anti Christ is a term for all scoffers of Jesus. Jesus, in the New Testament which He entirely wrote -- refers to the "second" as the Holy Ghost, or the Holy Spirit, or the Deliverer.
The third Christ (3000 a.d.) is "the Ressurection" ... 'ressurected on the Third Day' (In full Power): "Day" as in Lifetime...
Don't mind me though I'm a bystander!

The Spirit is The Holy Spirit of the Triune God.
Jesus gave us the Holy Spirit whe he left to guide and comfort us.
And that is the difference between the believer and the non-believer: the presence of the Holy Spirit in their heart and mind, which changes everything. You see the world in a new way and are new yourself.

first, you should get a modern translation--make it a little easier. Secondly, jesus said later that when he left (went back to heaven) he would send the holy spirit. One of the spirit's primary roles is two-fold: to convict sinners of their sin, and to serve as a witness to a christian's salvation. it's the spirit's job (the 3rd member of the trinity: father, son, spirit) to lead us into truth. at this time when jesus is speaking, the disciples still don't understand it all...however, as jesus says, when the spirit comes (the holy spirit) he will lead them into the truth they need. Same goes for today. Christians are led by the spirit in all issues of our lives--both faith and conduct.
I hope i didn't further confuse you.
