I noticed some people do not look at me when they speak or when I speak yet they will look at other people, especially in group discussion. Just curious to see why they are like that.

You might ask yourself: how do you know that you look genuinely interested? The reason I ask is that you mention that you were formerly in the military and you walk with your head high. People respect confidence, and that's great! At the same time, though, it is possible that this training may have disciplined your facial expressions as well as your posture! In other words, your body language may not communicate the message you believe it does. If people who are talking have a choice about who to make eye contact with because there is more than one person present, they are probably going to tend to look at the person or persons whose facial expressions indicate that they are following the course of the conversation. In other words, they will probably tend to look at people who are expressive and whose facial expressions change with the points they make or stories they tell. When listening, notice yourself: do you nod slightly in agreement? If you disagree or are confused, do you have a warm but puzzled look on your face? Do you laugh easily? These expressions don't need to be exaggerated. When you are in the role of the speaker to a group of people (even if just casually), you probably want to spend the most time looking into the eyes of people who affirm through their body language that you are interesting, funny, or stimulating! It's human nature!

Strangely enough, overly confident individuals intimidate people. You've got to come down to their level once in a while and show them you're human also or soon they'll just be rolling their eyes behind your back. People like knowing that you make tons of mistakes too...even though you come over as pretty professional.A joke or personal experience might help.

From your avatar, I'm thinking you may be Asian. I have heard that some Asian cultures do not like eye contact as much as we do in the West. Perhaps they are trying to accomodate what they think is your cultural preferences?

I know what you mean. I'm obese, and I hate when a person won't look you in the eye. But I do. It seems I make people nervous when I do that.

I know what you are talking about. I have similar experience with some people.

I think it is mostly due to their inferiority complex. Sometimes it could be simply shyness, or lack of social skills.

some people are just like that, its usually when a person is non-confrontational, nervous or if they feel they dont know you well, as avoiding eye contact Is a way of avoiding confrontation

could it be that you act shy? or walk with your head down and shoulders slouched? or maybe they think your ideas aren't up to par (doesn't mean they are), or maybe you don't speak up to get noticed? Do you have strange color hair or lots of piercings?
