I think you're thinking of an Attention Span......in young children and mentally challenged adults it is said that their attention span is short meaning it's hard to keep their attention for very long...........

ADD would be a short attention span.

Attention span is your ability to concentrate on a subject or problem for a given period of time. A satisfactory attention span will let you work on the problem until it is solved.

Short attention span people may have a problem focussing on a problem until it is solved.

Ideally a person should be able to shift focus as needed but to stay on task as long as necessary to complete it.
