Does this phrase sound natural English : "supported by cultural basis"? How to rephrase it to fit the context?

...which is mainly supported by cultural biases based on familial relationships created by marriage.
Basis doesn't seem to make any sense used the way it is in this sentence. I think "base" would be a better word here and would make the sentence easier to understand. "Biases", as in the second example, would add a new word that you might not want to add.
