Would you consider the groups the former USSR, or groups the U.S. has "funded" to be better equipped? I guess, in a nutshell, who is carrying more weapons; groups carrying U.S. made M16's? Or, people carrying Russian and/or Chinese made AK's?

Hint: The right answer isn't necessarily who has the "most guns". The question really is, in the world of criticism we live in today, what countries have been MOST irresponsible in allowing their weapons to be sold to anyone with a buck, or a cause (but mostly a buck)?

The guns don't matter, unless the man behind that gun is well trained in how to use it. In North Korea we were out-gunned 10-1 and we ended up kicking then all the way back to the boarder. In terms of technology and the level of training that solders receive, then the united States is the big dog on the block. But other country's like china and north Korea are making a push to become a more modern army. You can give me just two well trained mortar teams, and put them up against 10 other mortar teams who have never trained with the weapon and i guarantee that the two who were trained will win each and every time.

The AK-47 is the most produced weapon in the world hands down, the M-16 does not even come close. The AK-47 has been around a long time. It is very simple, very reliable, and has a multitude of variations.

" The AK-47 became a symbol of left-wing revolution; between 30-50 million copies and variations of the AK-47 have been produced globally, making it the most widely used rifle in the world."

"The M16 and the AK-47 are designed with different beliefs in mind. The AK-47 was the result of Soviet combat experience during World War II. Studies of battlefield reports showed that most combat occurred within 300 meters, and the winner was usually the side with the most firepower. The M16, on the other hand, was influenced by the U.S. Army's preference for an accurate semi-automatic weapon. A replacement was needed, in the middle between the traditional philosophy of highly accurate semi-automatic rifles, and that of the automatic AK-47. The M16 was the middle ground."

In todays world of air power, flying drones, IED's, tanks, and ballistic missles, I am not sure if a machine gun is the ultimate factor in determining who is better armed.

Does it matter who has sold the most?
both the U.S. and USSR sold weapons (and lets not forget the Frenchies) world wide, all to both legitimate causes and those not so legitimate - like the Weapons of Mass destruction the U.S. sold to Iraq (that's how they knew they had them, and were really "upset" when they couldn't find them).

I believe a number of unaccounted sofisticated weapons and weapon systems are held by the terrorist gangs like Alquida, Palastine, Afghanis, Pakistan supported Islamic terror gangs, Tamil Elam groups, Irish groups, Spanish groups, Terror gangs in Algeria, some in Africa etc.

If you account them it could cross the legally held ieces of certain large armed forces nations!!!

there are more ak's in the world then all versions of m-16s, m-4s and AR-15s put together.

ak's are cheap, easy to use, do not require alot of maintenance. you could drop on in mud and leave if for 10 years, pick it up and still use it, but it is not as accurate as the gas operated m-16 series.

We are better armed than any other military force. The only reason all of these third world Asian countries use the AK47 is because they can't afford M-16s

I think the United States has more weapons than we can comprehend in which we pay for. Thats why every chance we get to use them we do.
