Unfortunatly no. If you have been called to active duty for contigency operations (i.e. Iraq) in the past their is a program where you can pay for Tricare but you have to be in the selected Reserve (drilling status).

Check out this website for details: http://www.tricare.osd.mil/reserve/reserveselect/TRS-Step1.cfm

Basically, while you are in the IRR you really don't draw any real benefits since you aren't particiapting in a real way. I am not dispariging you for being in the IRR, it's just the way things are. If you get called up then you will be qualified for all the normal active duty benefits but not until then.

Serving in the IRR, or activated from the IRR? If the vet has not been activated, IRR status should not affect any veterans benefits. If the vet has been activated from an IRR status, you would need to talk to the chain of command to see where to go to get more specific information, though I think the family would be eligible for at least a limited form of Tricare while the vet is activated.
