finally a lovely lady is catching on, inspire other laddies and you will get the prize... of a date that is.
yes I am a shy 21yr old male and if I was asked out, I would not turn down anybody.
as roles have changed, women working outside of homes, surpassing men in higher education, and overall becoming more equal in the scheme of things since the 70's and the women's rights movement: yes I would say that these things have most certainly had an inverse affect on the culture and tradition of the man asking the lady out.
I am too caught in the middle so I do not approach it. I feel as though I am somehow lacking in something, perhaps self-confidence because of my status in society, a student and an apprentice painter. I have an old work truck that runs decent but is not flashy or worth much to anybody but me. I live at home with my parents while I am getting through school. I am an only child. Perhaps all of these things have an adverse affect on why I a 21yr old male do not ask lovely young laddies I meet out on dates.
Also, perhaps my perseption is blinded by the fact that for the most part, I see girls my age either exploring their sexuality in a meretrocious way or I see them looking to settle down with the right man. Both of which I have nothing to offer to so I wait and work on what it is I see a women would truely want of me to make me worthy of her love and see me fit to date LOL sorry got a little deep on ya, guess your q strung a meloncholy chord within me LOL good luck and yeah its okay to ask out guys!

Personally, I find girls who are more foward, more attractive, and as such I like girls who ask the lad out.
On a wider scale however, it all has to come down to equality. Females in society are being treated more like equals to men (yes, I know there is still a while to go, but it's a start) and this is a good thing. However, acting like the weaker sex, and refusing to ask someone out because: "That's what the man does." Is an antiquated notion, and will continue to be used as evidence that women are not as strong as men (it's untrue, but still believed by some)
It is the responsibility of all to ensure the continuation of equality between the sexes, and therefore, women must drop the: "Oh, Im a girl, so I cant ask someone out" mentality. It isnt the 1800's anymore.

If the feeling is mutual.. and you dig the shy guy... or even if he isn't shy, I say a girl is more then welcome to make the first move. Guys like a girl with confidence. At least thats what I was told when I asked the guy out.

No, it shouldn't. This IS the 21st century, and it has been acceptable for many years now for women to ask a guy out. I keep wondering where all the "modern" women are. If a woman doesn't ask me out, I assume there is a lack of interest.

i think it should be the guy asking the girl out and not the other way, come on ladies give them a reason to always come around, trust me guys love the chase,
going after them ourselves, just seems slutty and desperate, call me old fashioned, but i love it when guys do the chasing and not me

I think they should. I want a man who goes after what he wants. I want to be treated like a lady and this is a mans first step to doing that.

I think sometimes it depends on how close you are with the guy...just see how things go.
