all you have to do is make sure the dish points south east and un-obstructed, then connect the coxial cable from the LNB (the arm on the dish) and connect it to the back of your satellite reciever that says "antenna in".

Installing a satellite system is not a job for a beginner. I would not recommend doing it unless you have experience with coax cable, connectors and audio/video hook ups. But if you do...then read on.
First to decide is which system to use? The most common are DirecTV and Dish Network. Both use small dishes to pick up signal from the southern sky.
The location of the dish is critical. It will need an unobstructed view of the southern sky. You can go to either manufacturers web sites to determine what position on a compass your dish needs to face. This varies depending on which part of the country you live in. You'll need to mount the pole to a secure surface and make sure the pole is perfectly plumb (level)...this will speed up the "tuning-in" process significantly. Depending on the dish, you'll need to run anywhere from two to four RG-6 coax cables from its location either to the TV's themselves or a central distribution point. You'll also need to install a "Multiswitch" if hooking up more then 4 tv's.
You'll need to make sure each line is "Homerun" directly to the Satellite receiver. You can not use "Splitters" on any of the lines that run to the dish, as they carry DC voltage.
I would also recomend you ground your dish with at least 12g wire. This will protect you and your home against lightning strikes.
Once the wires and tv's are connected, you'll come to the toughest part of the install....tuning in the dish. Use the Satellite's receiver menu to help you do this. Click on menu, and then go to install or setup, then use the built in signal meter to do the job. There are also many web sites that can help you with tuning.
If you can complete the last step...congratulations! Your done.
I also agree with one of the other answers posted, most major satellite companies will do the installation for free with a 1-3 year subscription contract.
Hope this helps and good luck!
