My uncle has leukemia and they just found out my dad is a match. Has anyone ever done this for someone before? I know its not comparable to what my uncle must go through but I can't help being concerned for my dad. Is it as easy as giving blood?

Um, I don't know what these people are talking about! The information they're giving you is very outdated. Most of the time now, what is talked about as "bone marrow" donation is actually "stem cell" donation. Your dad will be given injections under the skin for a number of days to get his stem cells circulating, and then will spend a day (or even sometimes a few days in a row) on a machine similar to a dialysis machine, with 2 IV's in his arms to draw his blood out, filter out the stem cells, and give his blood back to him.
There's very little pain (although the injections do give some people back aches or bone pains as the bone marrow revs up), and it is very safe.
We almost never need to actually suck out people's real bone marrow anymore -- the injections work just as well, and it's obviously a lot easier!!
Hope that helps, and good luck.

Bone marrow is taken from the upper leg bones and the pelvic girdle. They make many punctures into the marrow containing spaces in those bones. It is VERY painful afterwards; but DURING, they will sedate him very well.
For your uncle to receive his brothers' marrow; it will be like a blood transfusion....HE has the easy part of the procedure. Your dad is a terriffic guy for doing this ! And thank God, he's a match !

I cant, yet i grew to become into on the registry earlier i grew to become into clinically determined with leukemia. I now am alive as consequently somebody else's beneficiant donation of stem cells. Your mothers and fathers could have an misguided appropriate of whats in contact in donating marrow. 50 years in the past it grew to become right into a terrible painful and extremely risky proceedure. today, its no longer. If somewhat bone marrow is donated, that's taken below many times used anesthesia or with an epidural. Its no longer overly painful on a similar time as asleep or with the different meds. that's a surgical proceedure, so of path there are negative aspects, yet.. in spite of if, lots of the time today donation is peripheral blood stem cells. those are a variety of white blood cellular interior the circulating blood. Donation is finished with the aid of aphersis, the comparable technique as in case you have been to donate plasma or maybe some crimson go donations. in case you have been pointed out as a tournament, you may struggle via very particular screening to make specific you're healthful adequate to donate. you may talk your scientific historic previous in huge information with the doctor, may well be counseled of the hazards, and can be allowed to make your own determination. Even after being pointed out as a tournament and medically cleared to donate, it continues to be Your option to donate or no longer. From the backside of my heart I thank people who're on the registry, yet, if its no longer for you, then I appreciate that to boot. What concerns me is which you made an person, counseled determination, your mothers and fathers didnt like it and you sponsored down. How old are you? You cant stay the the remainder of your existence doing each thing to maintain your mothers and fathers happy. I propose, is this something you want? As an person, there are going to be an incredible type of issues on your existence that your mothers and fathers dont accept as true with, because of the fact you're of a distinctive technology than they are. You cant go all the existence doing each thing to delight them, because of the fact you will on no account please your self.

ofcourse , the answer is yes! lemme tell u why . Marrow donation is a surgical procedure. While you receive anesthesia, doctors use special, hollow needles to withdraw liquid marrow from the back of your pelvic bones. Many donors receive a transfusion of their own previously donated blood.

Um, well, I'm sure he'll be fine - it won't effect him afterwards.
Unfortunately, it is quite painful and is quite a lengthy and precise procedure. It's not really anything like giving blood.
What a beautiful gift for your dad to five your uncle. If one of my loved ones needed marrow, I'd gladly donate it.

i was in your situation 15 years ago, only it was my cousin. a guy in germany donated blood,,it matched, then stem cells. turns out my cousin was only the 2nd person in the world to have this done and survive, and he's doing great these days. the donor told me it wasn't nearly as bad as had been described to him, and wouldnt hesitate to do it again.
i wish you and your family strength and courage.
