Anyone know some good sites with information on capital punishment in Canada? Or any facts, like what were the main factors in abolishing it, or how many people, after being executed, were found to be innocent....

The main factors in the abolition of the death penalty were all social and poltical. It just had bead press and the political climate had changed. One particularly important case however happened in the fifties with a man that is still fighting to clear his name: James Truscott. At the age of fourteen (I hope I get this all right) he was sentenced to hang for the rape and murder of a ten year old schoolmate. It is generally accepted that the evidence proves that he was in no way responsible and there was doubt to that effect right from the day of his sentence. Luckily for Mr. Truscott his sentence was commutted to life soon after and a few years later he was released on parole while his conviction was examined. Like I said, Mr. Truscott is still around, but avoids the limelight. He would be a really good place to start looking for how the end of the death penalty came about.

As for anyone being hanged for treason (and remember, when people are executed, they are hanged. To refer to someone being hung has no other meaning other than the reference to genitalia you hear so much more about) you obviously are a little weak on your western history. He was just a simple little guy by the name of Louis Riel......

It was abolished in 1976 by a vote in the House of Commons, though it had not been used since 1962.

Reasons: the fear of hanging the wrong person, plus a feeling that society must set a better example than scumbags themselves.
