Understanding the differences between an Operating System and software was my first conquest of understanding computers. For the life of me I just could not get what an Operating System was all about and its purpose. First of all, WindowsXP is computer software but it is also an Operating System. Windows 98, 95, Windows 3.1 right down to DOS (Microsoft's first Operating System) these are all operating systems. There are other Operating Systems but lets stick with Microsoft for simplicity. Microsoft Office is software, computer games are software, anti virus programs are software and the list goes on.
So what distinguishes an Operating System from everything else? The Operating System is the software that gives your computer all your commands that you either type in or click with a mouse. The Operating System is what links you to your computer and gets it to do what you want. Without it all you would have is a pile of electric components that would do absolutely nothing. You would type on that keyboard all day and nothing would happen. The Operating System is the translator that allows you to talk to that pile of electric components. This is not easy to explain because I remember it being explained to me and it took awhile for it to get through my hard noggin. Anyway, I hope I helped.

Hey
when you switch on the computer(hardware)
A special software called BIOS is loaded to the computer memory which inspects the available devices and then report it to the screen. Then search for the system software files normally in Hard Disk. These system software files are operating system files which are required to control the electronic chips which knows only the machine language(0's and 1's). the Operating System(OS) work as a translator to the hardware. All the application software like Ms Word Excel Ms Paint are all working on OS using the facilities provided to it.
so the system can be depicted as follows
First Hardware over it
Operating system(Kernel and shell)
over it Application software
over it you work
as an example see how you save a file in Ms Word
when you press save button
word use the disk operation Save function of the operating system
guess you got it
All the best

windows software is specifically written for the mswindows operating system and it usually means you have to pay for it.
Free and open source software is written for the Gnu/Linux and BSD operating systems which are created by programmers around the world who believe that software and code should be freely shared. The Gnu/linux and BSD operating systems usually come fully loaded with all the software you will ever need.
Then there is the Mac. It runs on OSX (name of the operating system). It comes with quite a lot of software pre-installed and can run many of the windows and open source/free software. It will cost you a little more initially than mswindows but in the long run it will be worth it because its solid and well designed.

I highly recommend to stay away from mswindows as it is the most vulnerable to malware (viruses, worms, adware, spyware, etc).
Macs and Gnu/Linux and BSD are great alternatives and you wont be plagued by all that nasty malware.
You can find information on these alternative os's on the internet, just google them.
have fun

computer software runs "on top of" the operating system...the operating system takes a command to print and makes the printer print...or takes a program command to write a record and actually write to the hard disk...or wherever
