A push-up is basically a bench press using 60 -70 % of your body weight. Say, if you weigh 110 pounds, you are pushing up about 65 - 75 pounds. To build the muscles used in push-ups, use a lighter weight on a bench press, either machine or free weights. Start very light, maybe 45 pounds ( the weight of a standard barbell bar by itself) and do as many as you can each workout until you can do 20 reps. Than increase the weight 5 pounds until you can do that 20 times, and so on. Do this only twice a week. When you are doing about half your body weight 20 times, try some push-ups to start your next workout. Keep increasing your workout weight and keep trying push-ups. You'll be able to do push-ups sooner that you might think.

As far as how many I can do?....Well, 30 years ago I did 43 with one arm. 30 minutes ago, *sigh*, it's just sad.....

Not everyone can do push ups, believe me I sucked in class!
You have to develope upper body strenght. Upper body involves your arms, shoulders, back and lower back. Your abs also play a big part while doing push ups.

I started going to the gym and now I can do series of 15. When I barely could do 3.

Just keep trying over and over again. Eventually you will be able to do them. I couldn't do a push up to save my life but I kept at it and now I do 3 sets of 20 reps :)

Lay flat on your stomach and push up until your arms are straightthen slowly go back down. You might have to start small and work your way up to more reps.

first you put your knee on the ground, and do push ups like that, remember that ur back must be flat, do 50 a day, than slowly change it to the normal ones.

balance your weight on your toes and on your hands with your fingers pointed forward. bend your arms down until your body is parallel and then bring yourself back up. practice everyday morning and night - and increase how many you do by 3 everytime you do them
