are you a teacher? If so, it is more than appropriate to thank them as a class, group or write a little something and copy it off. If it is a grade of kids bring in candy or inexpensive treats...if it really took a lot of the parents time, you might write a little memo and send it home with the kids...

A short speech in front of the class[es] and a thank you note for the bulliten board[s] would do it. "I want to thank everyone for the wonderful gift basket, I really appreciated the thought, time and effort you took to make it, it was beautiful." You could mention one specific item you really liked, "and don't think I didn't notice that sack of Hershey's kisses in there, you all know it's my favorite!"! Or mention the whole thing: "As you know, Mom hasn't been able to work since Dad got sick, the can goods really came in handy, there was not one item that we didn't like in the basket." The teachers would probably allow you the time, since public speaking is taught in schools. If you are shy, ask if you could hand deliver the card, and just say "thanks, everyone", leave, and let the teach read the card.
What a nice thing for them to do!

Is it a whole class or a whole grade? A class is not more than 40 usually and the whole grade could be 100. Which is which?

Anyways, write a thank you card to the whole class/grade and pin it up on the class/grade bulletin board.

Hmm. Maybe bake some cookies or somthing! & if your printer works you could always create & design your OWN little card and stuff on MS Paint or Microsoft Word. I have like no other ideas though. I hope my suggestions helped you!

throw them a little party... easy stuff a couple 2 liters maybe pizza if the school allows it. if not then just snack food and music.
you could even have them bring the stuff in and you could buy those ice cream packs things or popsicles or something

they are kids, and popsicles are stellar.
what more do i need to say

Compose some nice words to say (something truly how you felt and from your heart) or a poem perhaps, and ask that you be allowed to read it out to them in class.

A thank you poster with pictures from the school year?
Handmade of course- that would be a nice gesture, and not too expensive either.

Remember this when it comes around to other people's birthdays and organize something similar.
