I'm looking for one that won't eat up system resources and runs in the background or taskbar. Preferably free.

I would not use one that runs in background or use any of my screen space. Both are BOGUS.

You should have an anti-spyware solution on your computer. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

This double whammy will help keep you safe and running faster. You do a little bit of work regularly to keep things clean.

It's not free, but it's not expensive, either - eTrust Internet Security Suite has anti-spyware that runs in the background and actively scans memory and goes after spyware cookies automatically. I don't know what you've got for a computer set up, but it doesn't seem to slow mine down at all.

Most spyware programs don't actively scan your memory and files, so it really doesn't matter. Ad-aware or Spybot S&D are both good choices, that will scan when you request it.

By the way, you should also run 2 or 3 different spyware programs, as no single program will detect all spyware.

I use the free Microsoft download SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY. You need to click it to get it looking for spyware. it will then search in the background while the computer is on. When it has identified the culprits you go back to it and click on remove to get them away.

Ewido if you have Windows 2000 or higher.

It's from Grisoft AVG, but it's only free for 30 days.

SpyBot is not bad.

webroot spysweeper. Just set it to startup when windows starts and you'll never see it again, until it blocks spyware trying to be installed on your computer.
