The whole poop thing is still a mystery to me, too.
However, I find that I have the best luck when I do what the vet told me, which is to take him out precisely 20 minutes after he eats, which is when his system knows it must "make room for the new food" and he's really wanting to poop.
Since I did this while we were still potty training, I made a big deal out of it when he pooped, complete with praise and treats. He got the idea pretty quickly.

because you let them. when you stop a walk for your dog to poop it needs to be YOUR decision as a pack leader. if the dog doesn't go right away then continue your walk and stop again in 5 minutes or so. Your dog needs to learn that you are the boss and that it needs to poop, sleep, eat and play when you say so. Do you think wild wolves take forever to go poo when their pack leader wants them to do something? Be the boss!

Don't be so impatient. Let the dog do his business without interferrence.
A dogs nose is the strongest sense he has. Better than eyesight and hearing. When his nose is to the ground, he is doing the same thing you do when you are walking toward the bathroom: looking for just the right place.

that is a good question! My one dog will sniff around for ever to find that right spot, then while she is pooping she waddles around. She ends up ten feet away from where she started.
I have to admit: it's funny to watch.

The dogs have to find the "right" location to let everything out. It's like if you go to a public restroom and you look for the right stall, they are like that too.

I have no idea, but my dogs are like that, too. I swear, they take more time picking out a piece of ground than the average real estate agent!

(demanding however)
