Why is it unacceptable to wear white socks with dark pants?

Most consider white socks to be gym wear--only suitable for the locker room and the tennis court. Unfortunately, white socks are also free of color additives, and thus considered more sanitary that dress socks. If you can be fashionable, and accessorize your socks, fine. But some of use have special foot and leg problems and must only wear white socks because of doctor's orders. B.

you can wear white socks with jeans, but fashion says when your wearing pants your socks could be the same color. It's okay. just doesn't look very nice. Pick your self up a couple pair dark socks.

Yes it is! While I'm not the BEST dresser in the world I wouldn't do the michael jackson or Letterman thing. It 'ruins the line' and makes ya look a bit ungainly. Unless you're wearing athletic shoes. Or barefoot . . . or something!

It all started way back when. It seems there once was a beautiful young woman who's father was the king of the land. It turns out the young woman was coming home from her ride in the country one evening. Her horse threw her and she hit her head on a rock and was knocked out. Along bout midnight this young man stumbled across her laying there. She was totally out of it. He fed her and gave her some cool water and put her back on her horse and sent her on her way.When she got home her father ask her where had she been for such a long time. She told him of her adventure. He wanted to reward the young man who had helped her in her time of need. He ask her who the young man might be. She replied she had no idea having never seen him afore that night.The father said he needed to find this young man and he ask her to tell him everything she could of him.It seems all she could remember was he was wearing dark shoes and dark britches with bright white stockings.The next day the search was on all over the kingdom for the young man with white stockings and dark shoes and britches.They looked day and night for near two weeks when there came word that such a young man had been spotted two towns over to the east. The young man was found the next day by the bravest knight in the land.He brought the young man back to the king.Sadly upon meeting the young man the king did observe that the young man was gay as could be.This angered the young woman who had fantasized of the young man nightly.She cried for days for near a week. Her father so happy she had finally stopped the crying he took her to town to be fitted for a new dress.As they were walking into the dress makers shop she spied a man wearing white stockings with dark shoes and britches. She started crying once again as this reminded her of her fantasy man who turned out to be gay.Her father took her arm and guided her back to the carriage. On the trip back to the castle every man she spied was wearing white stockings and dark shoes and britches. Seems the ruckus made searching for the young man wearing the white stockings and dark shoes and britches had aroused the fashion sense of the men round town.Now all of them did wear white stockings and dark shoes and britches. This made the kings daughter so distraught that the king did make it crime to for any man to wear white stockings and dark shoes and britches.

it is not unaceptable, fashion wise you pick your own style but whit socks and dark pants and or shooes will cut the fluency line and make you look shorter. Stubby. And that is that!

Because someone decided it's not very fashionable. I agree. You are suppose to match your sox to your pants or shoes. Black shoes, black sox, black slacks. Brown shoes, tan sox, khaki slacks, and so on. However, I have been known to wear white sox with dress slacks. Just don't cross your legs.
