This is what Scientologists ACTUALLY believe:
Xenu was an alien ruler of the "Galactic Confederacy" who, 75 million years ago, brought billions of people to Earth in spacecrafts resembling Douglas DC-8 airliners, stacked them around volcanoes and blew them up with hydrogen bombs. Their souls then clustered together and stuck to the bodies of the living. The alien souls continue to do this today, causing a variety of physical ill-effects in modern-day humans. L. Ron Hubbard (a science-fiction writer and the creator of Scientology) called these clustered spirits "Body Thetans," and the advanced levels in Scientology place considerable emphasis on isolating them and neutralizing their ill effects.
To rid ourselves of "Body Thetans", we have to go through "auditing" with a member of the “church” who uses an "e-meter" to measure our “reactive mind” in order to clear our mind of “engrams” (past negative experiences stored in our unconscious mind) so that we can become “clear”...... and we have to pay lots and lots and lots of money to take courses on Scientology to advance to higher “levels” in the “church”. The “church” has also taken a very hostile stance towards psychiatry and psychiatric drugs irrespective of the fact that some people require medication to remain adequately functional in everyday life and has been known to withhold prescription pharmaceuticals from member (with deadly results).
Scientology is undeniably a cult.
Every cult can be defined as a group having all of the following five characteristics:
1. It uses psychological coercion to recruit, indoctrinate and retain its members
2. It forms an elitist totalitarian society.
3. Its founder leader is self-appointed, dogmatic, messianic, not accountable and has charisma.
4. It believes 'the end justifies the means' in order to solicit funds & recruit people.
5. Its wealth does not benefit its members or society.
Are Cults Harmful?
To remain within the strict mental and social confines of a cult for even a short time can have the following disastrous effects:
Loss of choice and free will. Diminished intellectual ability, vocabulary and sense of humor. Reduced use of irony, abstractions and metaphors. Reduced capacity to form flexible and intimate relationships. Poor judgment. Physical deterioration. Malnutrition. Hallucinations, panic, dissociation, guilt, identity diffusion and paranoia. Neurotic, psychotic or suicidal tendencies.

I want to clarify that the story of Xeno is just a fable and no Scientologist believe it to be true. In fact most Scientologist I have meet haven't even heard the story. Scientology is much like Buddhism but instead of meditation the use auditing with the same goal and better results. In Scientology what is true for you is what you yourself observe to be true. So u can believe in Jesus, Mahoma or Buddha. It doesn't matter as long as is your decision.

Scientologists ARE idiodic... I truly feel for them..
Everybody else above me is pretty much right. What's missing is that scientologists PAY thousands, sometimes even hundreds of thousands, of dollars for these auditting tapes that "purge you of your thetans."
Any religion shouldn't be about money--that's just wrong. Scientology is against everything that every other religion stands for.
Oh, and the only reason most scientologists haven't heard of the "Lord Xenu" story is because they have to be of a certain level of trust in the 'church of scientology' for that information to be revealed.
Let it ALSO be noted that scientologists aren't very nice when it comes to dealing with people that speak out against them. "Pests" that "stir up trouble" (tell the truth about their cult) are picketed outside their home, and if there isn't anything bad to say about them, church elders make up stuff to say about them.. For a church of 'truth,' they set a lousy example.

The are uneducated misguided idoits. It is a cult that is harmful aganist society. They attack psychiatrist and their practices and the very knowledge we have gained about mental illness. No one can tell me that I don't need medication. I know I need medication because whenever I'm not on it I want to die.
No all conditions can be treated with merely exercise and vitamins. I have Bipolar disorder and need medication to soothe my depression and mood swings. I've suffered sleepless nights with terrible anxiety about nothing.
I'm a psychology major and have studied extensively on the biology of the brain. There are real defects in the brain of the mentally ill; and real pain that hurts.
Scientology offers inadequate treatments if any at all, for mental illness. A realist knows that no one should live a miserable life it they don't have to. Does anyone agree with me? I want to destroy this cult before it brain-washes the public into believing that mental illness doesn't exist.
Scientology is more harmful than I thought. Some people don't realize how harmful it is. Some girl on another post about scientology gave me this link. What a freakin cult! I can't stand it when things like this happen because of stupid people and their ignorant beliefs.
I mean, a cult that was founded by a fiction writer? Did you ever read any of the man's quotes? He was a crazy person and these idiots are still following his absurd teachings. How dumb can people be?
I hope Scientology is destroyed before it does anymore harm.

The fiction writings of Ron Hubbard.... developed into a religion so he could get rich... here's what they believe taken from my studies on line...
Beliefs of the Group: From Dianetics...
In the doctrine of Dianetics, 18 there is believed to be two components of the human mind: the Analytical and the Reactive. 19 The Analytical mind, similar to the concept of "ego" coined by Sigmund Freud, is the part of the mind that one knowingly utilizes, and one is consistently, consciously aware of this part of the mind. However, beneath the Analytical is the Reactive mind. During moments of troubling emotional and physical pain, the Analytical mind shuts down and the Reactive mind takes control of the functions commonly associated with the Analytical. During this time of stress, the Reactive mind takes note of all the details happening, even though the individual may not be consciously aware.
These "recordings" of the Reactive mind are called "engrams," which Hubbard defined as a complete recollection of every perception occuring during unconsciousness. 20 Due to the unconscious nature of these engrams, an individual may not remember the traumatic experience. Nevertheless, the engram remains firmly placed in the mind of the individual. The inability to attain full human potential is considered to be the result of undeleted engrams. The personal therapy called " auditing" allows an individual to explore engrams, during which time the engrams are relived and then inactivated. An " auditor," considered a minister or minister-in-training in Scientology, conducts the auditing sessions and simply listens to the "preclear," a term associated with the individual receiving the auditing. 21 Just the auditor and preclear are in a quiet room with an E-meter (electropsychometer), which measures the energy of the mind created when it "pictures" an engram. 22 The preclear focuses on the engram with the help of a process question from the auditor. 23
The objective of auditing sessions is for an individual to be free of any engrams. When this occurs, the individual is said to be " Clear" and the Analytical mind can now function without the effects of the Reactive mind and its engrams. 24 Thousands of individuals have become Clear, thus gaining a greater understanding of their human potential. According to the Scientology document " The Bridge To A Better Life," a clear witnesses "...the highest state of awareness as a spiritual being." 25
One of the important steps in the Church of Scientology is attaining the state of Clear, which means that you are no longer burdened by engrams, or painful memories which cause aberrated behaviour.
Scientologists are taught that these engrams are stored in the reactive mind, and surface when you are in situations similar to when the engrams were created. By running out the engrams, through a process known as auditing, you get rid of your reactive mind and become Clear.
When a person becomes Clear, he or she is supposed to arrive independently at a certain idea, or cognition, known as the Clear Cognition. When he or she states this idea to the auditor, the person is given the Clear Certainty Rundown, and if this process is deemed successful, he or she attests to the state of Clear.
What is the Clear Cognition? According to several former members who reached the state of Clear, the idea may be phrased in a number of ways, but the gist of it is that the person was mocking up his or her reactive mind, and has stopped doing so. But what does this mean? First, we need to know what "mock up" means. Here is the definition from Scientology's own dictionary of technical terms:
MOCK-UP, v. 1. to get an imaginary picture of. (COHA, p. 100)
--n. 1. "mock-up" is derived from the World War II phrase which indicated a symbolized weapon or area of attack. Here, it means in essence, something which a person makes up himself. (Scn Jour, Iss 14-G) 2. a mock-up is more than a mental picture; it is a self-created object which exists as itself or symbolizes some object in the mest universe. It is a thing which one can be. (Scn Jour, Iss 14-G) 3. a full perceptic energy picture in three dimensions created by the thetan and having location in space and time. Now, that's the ideal definition. A mock-up is something the thetan puts up and says is there. That's what a mock-up is. (9ACC-24, 5501C14) 4. we call a mental image picture a mock-up when it is created by the thetan or for the thetan and does not consist of a photograph of the physical universe. (FOT, pp. 56-57) 5. any knowingly created mental picture that is not part of a time track. (HCOB 15 May 63)
That last definition introduces a very important element. Here is the quote from the referenced HCOB, entitled "The Time Track and Engram Running by Chains, Bulletin 1", with all emphasis as in the original:
Any knowingly created mental picture that is not part of the Time Track is called a MOCK-UP.
As we can see here, Hubbard stresses that a mock-up is knowingly created, and it is not part of the "time track", or the sequence of events that have actually happened to the thetan (soul). It is differentiated, within the same document, from a facsimile, which is a mental "photograph" of an event that actually occurred or a thing that actually exists.
We now return to the Clear Cognition, armed with this definition. A mock-up is a mental image picture a thetan knowingly puts up and says is there, but which does not consist of a "photograph" of the physical universe. Therefore, according to the Clear Cognition, the reactive mind did not exist, and it was the person himself or herself who knowingly put up the mental image picture of one.
But here is the important part: the reactive mind is a concept of Dianetics and Scientology. Preclears are told that they have a reactive mind, and taught how to begin getting rid of it. They only begin "mocking it up" after they learn of its purported existence, often spending thousands of dollars to get rid of a nonexistent thing which they had no reason to believe even existed until they encountered Dianetics and Scientology.
And that is the sad punchline of Scientology: that Scientologists spend years, and often quite a great deal of money, to rid themselves of something which they never had until they joined Scientology.
