Unfortunatly to my knowledge once service dogs are unable to perform their duties they are retired. I dont think this means you have to get rid of him, I mean if your in the position that you can still care for him then by all means I see NO REASON that you should have to give him up. Though you may want to start looking in to gettting fit w a new pup or service dog for that purpose & just keep your faithfull friend as just that...your friend. best of luck to you & I hope yuo can get him the help he needs to live on a while!

the best thing i think you should do is to start looking for someone to replace him and retire him.. like you said you dont know how long he has so i think you should start enjoying him more as a pet then as a service give him some time before he dies. good luck hope you find a solution

Keep your beloved partner and get him/her a student, and you some one to cry with when you lose your best friend. This way no matter how long it is untill they leave you, you will have a replacement right there.
Good luck.
