i have scanned the questions regarding this topic here but i don't know if these people have really read or heard the pope's speech.
i am a christian(catholic) and was saddened by the pope's speech, but was also proud when He said sorry
what just concerens me is this, people are also saying, yah right! peaceful christians eh? the crusades and the like..
again, the Pope Paul II already said sorry about those,
now with the killing of the nun and burning of churches,
i haven't heard of a muslim leader saying something about this, or whatsoever...
i do tolerate other religion, but sometimes, it is so easy to belive that majority of the muslims, are not so tolerate when people makes a remark againts them...
just want to air my dismay of what has just recently happend...

i am a christian and it is my shame that those dark ages of my faith have occured... i don't hide that fact nor deny it... that is the reason that some has gone away from the fold and i won't deny it.
why, is islam that clean of their history?
i am not saying to reopen those chapters, i am talking of what is happening today...
yes there are people(christians) who kills doctor that does abortion, but it could not be compared to the killinf of the nun...
why is it that no Muslim leaders stretched their arms and say, we don't like what the Pope has said, but we will try to pacify our people... why say, condemn the pope! it is time for blah blah blah......

the reason why muslims did not flourish in spain because they revolt... they protested with the violence of mulsims during thier time...
thats one of the reason why after they freed themsleves from muslim regime, they also wanted to spread thier first religion, christianity in the east, thus taking revenge also to the muslims that once were enslaving them...

It’s a pity that the Pope has chosen to exacerbate a world divide over religious lines that have nothing to do with the real problems humanity faces today, and it is saddening to watch how humanity in the post-cold war era has shifted from a real divide to absurd divides that contribute to humanity’s deteriorating material as well as moral and ethical tragic status quo under the U.S.-led globalization world order
It's like quoting Bin Laden at ground zero on the five year anniversary of 9/11. Unless you're quoting him to call him crazy, don't expect applause from the audience.
John Freedland wrote in the Guardian on September 19:
"This is what makes the Pope's defenders so disingenuous when they insist that he was merely engaged in a 'scholarly consideration of the relationship between reason and faith'.
"He is not a lecturer at divinity school. He is the head of a global institution with more than a billion followers…When he digs out a 700-year-old sentence that could not be more damning of Islam…he has to know there will be consequences."
Attacks on churches in the West Bank should be condemned and should be used as an example of what not to do when offended by a Pope that has done nothing for suffering Palestinian Christians—especially at a time when Christians and Muslims should be uniting (as many have) against a brutal Israeli occupation that dominates every facet of their life.
One does have to be weary of who these "unknown groups" attacking the churches are, just as one had to be weary of the non-nationalist group that sprung up in Gaza and kidnapped the two Fox news journalists.
Those seeking unrest will prey upon incidents like this (taking on a transparent cover) and use the Pope as an excuse.
It was reported by the media that Hamas and Fatah both forcefully condemned the attacks and, as Khalid Amayreh reported, "Sheikh Muhammed Hussein, the highest-ranking Muslim clergyman in East Jerusalem described the bombing as 'immoral, unethical and injurious to Palestinian unity.'"
The West is systematically destroying half the countries in the Middle East and has its eye on a couple more. Muslims have the right to be infuriated by the Western world's collective effort to control the Middle East by force—this includes the policy pushed forth by the Pope.

Pope said that Islam was spread on the base of Violence.
Muslims ruled for 800 years in Spain , but people are still non Muslim there.
Muslims ruled for a 1000 years in India , still 85 percent of the Indian population is non-Muslim. Do you think that 1000 years was a small time? If Islam was to be spread by sword in India , every single non-Muslim will be forced to convert to Islam or else killed. This is very clear that Islam don't allow any Muslim to force some one to convert to Islam. Becaue if some one dont accepts Islam by heart , he is not a Muslim at all. so it is useless to force any one to come to Islam
Muslim never ruled in Indonesia but still it is the country having largest Muslim population.
America is a country in which the growth rate of Islam is highest as compared to any other religion. Is Osama Bin Laden preaching Islam in America????? ?
if Pope has some dignity and courage , he should come to have a speech with Muslim scholars and prove his statements.
"Why can't he see what's being done in Iraq, Afghanistan and West Asia?"
"The Pope has toed the US line of campaign against the Islamic world. But I would like to ask the Pope what he thinks about the US and UK atrocities in Iraq."

I am a Muslim and I condemn all acts of evil. Anyone of any religion or lack of who kills or harms innocent people should be condemned and brought to justice. That being said, the Pope should have realized that he lives in a glass house. I want to remind him of the history of the Catholic Church upon the helm of which he now sits. It was the Church that burned scientists alive, it was the Church that invented the Indulgences and Simony systems, it was the Catholic world that invented the Inquisitions, the pogroms, and all other abominations associated with its dark practices against critics and opponents, including Christians who didn’t extend fealty to Rome .
And the Crusades? And the Holocaust? Must we re-open these dark chapters again? Do we have to remind his holiness that in the past century alone, over a hundred million Christians were killed by other Christians in numerous wars, including two world wars? May we remind his holiness that he himself sixty years ago was a member of the Hitler Youth? And then how about the spread of Catholicism in South America ? Was it done through the example of platonic love and self-abnegation?
I understand that the Pope sees in Islam the greatest strategic competitor for the hearts and minds of men in the world today. This is quite legitimate as competition between religions and civilizations is natural and inevitable, just as it is between individuals and companies and other entities.
Well, but let the competition be honorable and free from mendacious vilification.

I grow up in Indonesia so I know how bad bad thing happen, My church also got burn twice. Not only church but many pastor have been Kill and torture in Indonesia. They just like violent that all. Also as you know, Islam hate other religion. If you live at the majority islam population you will know, even if they vast during the ramadan and you also need to vast even you are not islam, if not you will got hate crime. With the Pope situation, even The Pope say Sorry it doesnt solve the problem because Islam think this is the point for them to start the violent. any violent need some accuse not they got the excuse.

If they have faith in their religion then nothing anyone says should matter. But they are not typical Muslims, they are extremists and giving all Muslims a bad reputation, making everyone think this is Islam. I know many Muslims; they are not supporting this violence!
Same as Christians who shoot abortion doctors; they don't represent most Christians either and are condemned by the church.
We have to stop believing that extremists in any religion represent the religion accurately–they do not.

i am half christian half muslim so i am split here..... on one side i do not agree with people when they say all muslims are basically animals because they are not.... and the pope was very wrong in saying that statement, considering that some of the world right now is mistaken and ignorant to what really is happening and what muslim religion is about, there are only a few muslims that are violent people... just like in every religion.... tell me about the crusades and the pope's statement... thats definitely not how all us Christians feel.... i have heard and seen a lot of people of every religion call themselves "very religious" but what they actually bring forth is against all the religion's customs... such as the violence that happened by those people that say they're religious when what they actually do is put down the name of muslims and make the world believe all Muslims are violent and savage people... what the groups that gathered and committed the crimes did was wrong.... but people stop blaming all muslims for it because most of them are nice people... just like everyone else.... and by the way for people who think that muslims worship another God please research and become educated before u make a statement like that because they have the same God as all of us.... Allah is just a way of saying it in Arabic.... and if we keep up with hate it will only bring us to destruction and chaos.... please think before you say something like that and lets all just live peacefully without hate

as for why muslims dont ask sorry to kill the nun. there were many people who did say against killing and rioting, they did may be u never watch BBC.
i also do not support any terrorism. its stupidity to think that killing others or holding violent rallies will help solve matters and bring in any solutions. we need to speak out but in a soft and firm manner, but yet another question -- will others be ready to accept us.
i will never ever nor will my future or previous generations ever support crazy monkeys who blow up people. but let me also add, i will also not support those who kill civilians when all they need is one man. i want a peaceful world for my children to come. and let me add, ALLAH nor Islam nor Muhammed-pbuh ever said -- go and kill someone unjustly. they said do it as the last resort to self -defense when no peace talks would work.
for a person of Pope's caliber, he holds far more responsibilities. he should try bringing communities closer , rather this Pope seems to be driving communities further apart. to quote someone using as an excuse was something wrong. there were many qoutes but instead he chose to quote a man who killed many people himself. shows the Ignorance, doesnt it?.
the Pope could have qouted what people like --
Thomas Carlyle in 'Heroes and Hero Worship and the Heroic in History,' 1840
Mahatma Gandhi, a statement published in 'Young India,'1924.
Dr. William Draper in 'History of Intellectual Development of Europe
W. Montgomery Watt in 'Muhammad(saaw) at Mecca,' Oxford, 1953.
K. S. Ramakrishna Rao in 'Muhammad(saaw): The Prophet of Islam,' 1989
Jules Masserman in 'Who Were Histories Great Leaders?' in TIME Magazine, July 15, 1974
Gibbon in 'The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire' 1823

Isnt it strange?! Note that the piece connecting muslims with voience was written 700years ago so tell me what has changed - A nun killed and churches burned, terror and violence - history repeating itself as it hasnt been learned from!! It makes me sick to see all this trouble and muslims demanding apologies for this and that, funny i didnt hear them apologise for the death of the nun (what did she have to do with what the Pope said??) In fact i dont hear the muslims apologise for most of the things they do. They like terror too much!!

I don't get it either. I didn't read the speech, but I can't imagine that it justified murder.
It drives me nuts when people compare things done by Christians hundreds of years ago with murders occurring NOW.
It doesn't make sense.
By the way, did you know some of the people on here don't think Catholics are Christian? I'm not Catholic, but I don't like one group deciding for others who is Christian and who isn't.

i am a muslim. and killing the nun woman is a behavior of cowardness. Muhammad forbid killing women and children during war. so imagine this with the enemy, how about a nun who has nothing to do with this.
the Pope statement came in very sensitive time, where Iraq is being occupied, the attack agains lebanon and palastin, and other issues.
the Pope is being more politician than religious. why not he also mention the injustice of Christians by occupying other countries? where does the oil of Iraq goes.
his statement is misguided, Islam is peaceful with those who are peaceful with it. why they even insult Islam for, first Muhammad cartoon, then the Pope himself? you don't see Muslims insult Jesus. and he doesn't know much about Muhammad. Muhammad who came as mercy to the humanity, but many people don't know.
anyway, i forgive the man (Pope) because of his age, and his ignorant of Islam.
