Signs of true suicidal tendencies include:

1-Having a plan
2-Mood change- can be for the better (resolved to end your life)
3-Giving away personal belongings

Having a plan ranks very high- Most people think about snuffing it out, but not as many ruminate about the ways to do it. We use this to determine seriousness. It's not the end all and be all.

It's not a trick question. Before asking that, they will ask "Did you ever have thoughts or feelings of wanting to hurt yourself?" If the persons answer is "No." then there's no point in asking if the person has had thoughts of how they would do it. If the answer to the first question is "Yes", then the second question is asked. The importance of the second question is that most people have had suicidal thoughts at one time or another, but among those people fewer have thought about ways of doing it. The risk of a person actually killing themselves is greater if they've considered ways of doing it, but it would be incorrect to say that the person wouldn't do it just because they've never considered how. It is true that a person's chance of being hospitalized psychiatrically is greater if they say they have had thoughts of ways of doing it. It's not a trick, but just one of the ways that a psychiatrist, psychologist or therapist tries to evaluate suicidality.

When you answered "No" to that question and that was your TRUE answer, that was smart. It was not smart if you said "No" but your real answer was "Yes", because the only way anyone can get help is if they are honest about their feelings.

They seem, if not always to ask that question. They will ask if you were to committ suicide do you have a plan on how it will be done? Just remember one thing about counseling, and suicide. There are two questions that will get you placed in an alsymn. If you are a danger to yourself is one. If you are a danger to others, that is the other.
It onoly takes two people to place you in "lock-up"! One is the judge, and the other is one family member. But you will be represented by a lawyer to defend you...

Because most people that have serious thoughts of suicide have also thought of a plan in which to carry it out. The psychiatrist is trying to make sure you are not going to harm yourself

Its to see if you've planned suicide before. Its also to see if you think about how you would kill yourself. Basically a trick and if you say yes they put you in a mental home. Its a good thing you said no.

Because, males do it usually with guns and women usually with pills.

Are you at all suicidal? They have to ask that, it's law in most states I believe.
