i'm growing out my hair, so i am trying to trim it as little and as infrequently as possible.. if i leave split ends for a while.. will they really travel much farther up the hair and cause more damage? the split ends i have seem to just stay at the ends..

They do stay at the ends. That's why they're called "split ends." The only problem is that the can eventually break off, and the new end will split. If you're trying to grow out your hair, use a good conditioner each time you shampoo, concentrating on the ends. That will help prevent split ends and breakage.

my friend let her hair grow for 2 yrs without cutting and the split ends were about half an inch, but almost every strand had split end. altho its not very serious splits it was a LOT of splits which looked bad.

If you maintain your hair by using a combination of mayo, eggs and olive oil every week, your hair will stay healthy and the split ends will stay at the end of your hair.
