do you cherish your bible? do you read your bible?
if you cherish your bible, which often contains notes, thoughts and even family histories, then you are in the same boat as the Rcc. we too cherish that which makes our walk with God more visible.
when you read your Bible do you not get images in your mind? are you then creating a false image? words were given as a gift to portray the reality of images that were reality. words paint a picture - create a scene. pictures and scenes are images. in the past most Christians could not read, pictures helped them to understand, to remember & recall.

when my home flooded, while i was quite saddened by the loss of numerous "items" i'm thankful - i never cried. nothing of any consiquence was lost - neither a life nor my faith. things do not make ones faith, but some things can help you remember when (as humans it happens) we start to loose our way.
YSIC & God bless you all.

dartheric11 - wait until you see the "bigots" here - that's the only reason this question was asked - sich and tired of people's ingorance toward Catholicism

no, it is a desperate attempt to help people stop lying about that which they do not know. people who claim to speak about the Rcc and what they do who are not part of the community are only showing their hatred and that's not what Christianity is all about.

For heaven sake, only the most foolish of bigots still think that Catholics worship idols. Some of the best Christians I have known are Catholics. They love God with all their heart, and they love their neighbor as themselves. It boggles my imagination that the hate speech of Catholics worshiping idols is still out there. I guess it is the same people who hate African Americans and other groups they do not understand. May God help these people.

I'm not sure what your actually question was...but I don't think most Protestants really get all that worked up about the whole idol/icon thing anymore (though they used to be). My grandfather and stepfather are Southern Baptist preachers and I can't recall either of them ever really saying anything about it. I think most Protestants are more concerned about other theological differences like the use of priests and confession than idols/icons.

Did you really just compare the Bible( the word of God Almighty) to an idol?

This is a desperate attempt to justify idolatry

This is a really, really bad example

The Bible is the word of God. Jesus Is called the word in John. To equate people who read the Bible and focus on its meaning (Jesus) with people who bow down to idols is incorrect. Jesus never bowed down or made statues, yet he had the Book of Deuteronomy memerozied (He quoted it when he was tempted in the wilderness). If meditating on the word of God and incorporating it into your life is idolatry would mean that Jesus sinned, so yes it is a desperate attempt.

"We don't pray to the statues they are just symbols that help us focus on God."

The ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, etc prayed to statues of Zeus and other gods and they knew that it was not literaly Zeus. Zeus had many temples with many statues. They knew that it was only a symbol. So yes you are praying to the statues or else why would GOD say not to do it. When you make idols you don't elevate your concept of God rather you debase it by confining an omnipotent, ominpresent God into a "graven image".

"Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of ANY THING that is in HEAVEN above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth."
Exodus 20:4

What is your definition of idolatry?
