Yes, the japanese have learned from their mistakes...we saved hundreds of thousands of lives, (Japanese and american) by ending that horrible war with the efficient atom bomb. It' terrible they forced us to do this, but we are a good people..and we didn't want all those good 19 year old boys killed 'cause the leaders didn't know they lhad already losted the war.

Now we can learn from all the mistakes from the past...we won....they lost...let's move on.

No, I don't think the Japanese are sincere in their apologies for WW2. First, they don't teach about the war that they started in school. Even the Germans are required to teach about the Holocaust. Second, the Japanese culture is a very old one. Minutes, hours, years ,and centuries mean nothing to them. They are a very patient culture. Third, they still to this day revere their war criminals, like Tojo. They have and probably will always hate Western culture. And as for us dropping the bombs, Truman had the guts to stop the war. If not, we could have lost at least 1/2 million men if we had invaded Japan. And, I still feel that the Emperor should have been tried along with the rest of the criminals, just like the allies did in Nuremberg.

I think it's a possibility that those that were alive during WW2 are sincere, but I think their situation is probably similar to ours. Most of their WW2 veterans are dead, and the rest are very, VERY old. The bulk of their population (and ours, me included) probably bears no enmity toward the people their ancestors fought against in that war because most of the popualtion wasn't even thought of yet. My MIL is the child of an American soldier and a Japanese woman. She was born in 1958, and I don't think she bears any guilt for WW2 in her own mind, or anyone else's.

Why not?

It's easy to apologize for something your grand parents did.

WWII was three generations ago, most people can't even remember yesterday why ask them to try 60 or 70 years ago.

An apology is "sounds in the wind",...a waste of time and a lot of nothings bumping into each other.

Yes, they have had to look deep into their souls just like all nations after war and the atrocities committed against our troops in the Philippines and the Pacific campaign. Remember the Ba-tan Death March.

Those who understand it, yes. But Its like asking an American child to be sorry for what happened to the Native Americans... they can't be sorry because it wasn't their fault... they had nothing to do with it.

Good point "Medic", I've noticed the US hasn't apologized for the atrocities they committed. Reagan did pay his respects at the graves of the Nazi SS cemetary.
