The yellow is fungus infection of the nail. The black is a bacterial infection under the nail. See a foot doctor to treat it.

There is a commercial on tv that says it could be a yellow cat looking thing living under your toenail.

Sounds like fungus. Stop wearing shoes so often - even go barefoot to allow your feet to BREATHE! And go and see your pharmasist for some fungal cream. Clean your nails everyday with kerosene as well.
By any chance did you have pedicure?

Thats a nail infection. See a doctor and ask for Lamasil, works great but can take up to six months to heal.
