The virus is inhaled and causes sputum to form- and then it falls into the back of your throat.

It's post-nasal drip, and it's nasty. Some kind of lovely virus must be going around, because you're about the fiftieth person (including myself) that has complained about that this week.

Try some robitussin -- it thins the mucus even if you're not coughing.

The back of your nose is open to your throat. Think about it. When you breath through your nose, how does the air get through your throat to your lungs?
