We just got married this past saturday. We had an outdoor wedding reception and nothing was planned out. It went ten times better then I ever imagined it would. Everyone ate, danced we cut the cake through the bouquet. We were on no time schedule and it all worked out perfect. good luck to you and congratulations.

This is from a female.
We had an early afternoon wedding and an outdoor reception at a beautiful family log cabin in the woods, on a lake. We had canopies (in case it rained) and the caterer did basically a big BBQ. Everyone spent the remainder of the day getting to know each other, sharing food, having drinks (not all alcohol) and it was all a very casual and comfortable sort of affair. We did have some recorded music to play as background, but mostly forgot to turn it on and we didn't miss it.
We actually received many thank-you notes from guests that thanked us for inviting them to share the experience.
It was great - but it was what we BOTH wanted. A canned wedding would have been just too weird and not at all like the people that we were, or still are.

I would like a big party with a loose itinerary. I want enough structure to ensure that everything I want to happen happens, but not so much that it strangles the moment. Yeah, cake cutting can be scheduled for 10pm, but if it happens at 10:15 cuz everyone is too busy dancing, no worries!

We are having a basic itinerary. You know, 4:30 -- dinner, 5:00 -- traditional stuff 5:30 -- band starts.
Being that nailed down though is too crazy. It's cruising for a bruising. Getting off by even a MINUTE will get you off for the rest of the night. Let's face it--the day is going to go as it wants to go.
We are NOT having any of the chicken dances, electric slide, etc. We're having a folk dance instead. :-)

Im a woman and I would rather have as you call it a canned wedding .Why because in some groups its the only way you can get anyone to dance at all.Besides its traditional.Dont worry after the drinks start flowing it will turn into your big party.

Im a woman and i (personally, this is just my opinion, do what works for you) i think that certain events should be planned (the first dance and the dance with father) but others should just be random and partied out (chicken dance, cotton eyed joe, etc.)

This really depends. Some guests like to know what's coming up, & even have a program! Others just want to mingle and have a good time visiting with the other guests.
I personally like the mingling part.

I think you just need a couple of set times ie time when the wedding starts and time when you sit down and start speeches thereafter everyone can dance and eat as they like.

That itinery thing never works out. My biggest thing when I got married was to the DJ no Electric Slide, No Macarena, No Chicken Dance because I hated them. But fortunately for me he knew better cos those were what got people out onto the empty dancefloor. Thanks Darryl.

I think some kind of itinerary is necessary otherwise people would be eating cake before dinner.
