I have had blood poisoning. I had a tiny, tiny cut on my index finger from opening a Christmas card. I'd cleaned it well but I woke during the night with great pain and found the finger swollen and black. I worked that day but in the evening my fever went to 104' quite quickly and I noticed three red streaks running from my finger to my elbow. I went to the ER where they swabbed the infected area for testing and started me on antibiotics. I was lucky to recover quickly but my joint was damaged . Good luck to your mother.

I didn't but a friend of mine did. He got it while we were cleaning crabs for dinner and got cut from one of them. He ended up a day or two later with a red line running up his whole arm, had to go in the hospital. They give you some kind of IV... fluids and, I guess, antibiotics and it cleared right up. It is dangerous if you get it and it's left untreated but I wouldn't worry too much about it since she's in the hospital. I think once they start treatment and getting the poison out of your system, it's fine and she may just have to be there that long for observation. Good luck!!

I've never had blood poisoning, but her treatment will consist of antibiotics and fluids - possibly blood transfusions. It comes from bacteria getting in the blood somehow. Either through and open wound or from having dental work done and bacteria getting into the gums while they're bleeding.

My mother had it once. Never could find out how she got it either. She was in the hospital for like a month I think. She went to the doctor herself and he immediately had her transferred to the ER. Doctors there said if she hadn't come for help in a day or two more, she would be dead.

It's a touch and go area they say... What I mean is there is a chance they cannot control it but there is a chance they can...

I never had but a friend of mine had. As soon as you identify the problem antibiotics shall be administered by a good doctor. If the poison is not by intentional action, chances of survival are very good. if not bad luck.
