Depends on the time of day. Getting through out and in the airport and then downtown and back can get quite hectic. I lived in Austell for 15 years and though we had Six Flags and had lots of stuff to do, the one thing I liked the most was getting around that airport and checking it out. Folks that live there can't do that anymore thanks to Asama but you can cause you got a ticket.

Oh yea! MARTA has train service directly in and out of that airport now. Here's a map to points out side the airport.

Enjoy!

Six hours is probably enough time to do one thing - assuming it's on or very near the marta (subway) line. So, if you did venture out and only looked at one thing - I'd go to the Georgia Aquarium. It's wonderful! Book your tickets in advance... seriously...

An off the beaten path choice is Historic Oakland Cemetary. Margaret Mitchell (Gone with the wind author), Bobby Jones (golfer) as well as many other noteable atlanta figures are burried there. It is also one of the few (if only?) places where union and confederate soldiers are burried next to each other. The cemetary is laid out like a rural garden and is a really nice place to visit. Tours are also available.

THE VARSITY!!!! go to the varsity! it's downtown and a local fave to eat at! Best junk food on the planet!!!! Right off of I-75......That's all I really remember on how to get there. The world of coke and "under ground Atlanta" (a mall underground) are there too in downtown. The aquarium is Downtown too, but I've heard it's been hard to get in to it, yes it's that popular.

The other cool restaurant is near the airport and you need to be a big Chick-fil-a fan!! The "Dwarf House", which is the original Chick-fil-a is very close to the airport. It's basically a sit down (not fast food) restaurant. And if you are reaaaaaally lucky on Tues and Thurs sometimes they do "all you can eat" nuggets ;o)

Hope that helped!

But the others are right about the security at the airport, it's bad in ATL!!!!! (have plenty of time to get back)

I'm not sure if the above response was an answer, but depending on when your flight is, there is an outdoor festival in historic College Park. You can easily take a taxi to Main Street and walk to the festival. The Historic College Park area is about a 5 minute taxi ride from the Airport. It is much closer than all of the other locations suggested.

I believe that Atlanta airport is the buissiest in the world. Its not good to leave because you need much time to return. International flights need many hours more than america flights. I plan to go to Atlanta also and i have looked at this.

I have to agree that six hours is not alot of time, Hartsfield International is a huge busy airport and security line to get back in takes hours to get through, even though downtown is nearby.
But if you insist i recommended the Little Five Points area and Atlantic Station in the heart of Atlanta. if its not raining that is. They both have shops and eating places.

what ever you do don't leave the airport. you will never get back through security in time to catch your flight.

they have interesting art to look at and plenty of stores to shop in, the food is well....airport food....ok not great. the smoking sections are on terminal c and a, but you don't even have to light up to get a fix, just walk in, inhale and walk out. LOL

I hate Atlantas airport. We missed two of our flights because our first flight from San Antonio to the Atlanta airport because we arrived at the airport 30 minutes late, because of the pilot. it took them forever to find a place to pull up at to let everyone off. And besides that, we were running around the airport with a screaming two year old! She would NOT behave! She got her butt spanked about twenty times for trying to run off by herself. And then they were trying to tell us that we couldnt leave to North Carolina because our ticket was the wrong ticket and that we couldnt leave until someone came and picked us up. we were 400 miles away from San Antonio and about 325 miles away from North Carolina. We had no way to contact our mom because my sisters phone was dead, and our mom hadnt heard from us in 7 hours. And at the same time my two year old niece was throwing a fit throuout the whole airport, and everyone was staring at us. My sister was cursing her head off, trying to find an airplane that could get us leaving. We hadnt eaten all morning we barely got any sleep we hed to get up at 3:00 in the morning.Running around an airport with a grouchy two year old and no way to get to North Carolina was the WORST airport experience that i have ever experienced. and my very first. NEVER WILL WE EVER GO TO THAT AIRPORT AGAIN!! DELTA SUCKS!

six hours in hartsfield/jackson isn't enough to leave the airport. luckily there are some decent resturants and plenty of stores to look through...but take a good book and wear comfortable clothes...
