It is around 200 miles from NYC to Ithaca and it is probably 4-5 hours by car from JFK airport. I do not think there is any direct transport from New York City to Ithaca--even from the downtown bus station. I would suggest that you take a plane to Syracuse--there is ground transport from there. There might be transport from Binghamton as well. However, I would also contact Cornell and the organizer of your course for additional information.

My dog had a sugery in cornell. But I would say you should go with the newark airport. The Ithaca Tompkins County Regional Airport located northeast of the city has flights on US Airways to and from Philadelphia and New York - Laguardia, as well as on Northwest Airlines to and from Detroit. By car, Ithaca is about 1 hour south of Syracuse, 1 hour north of Binghamton, 2 hours southeast of Rochester, 4 hours north of Philadelphia, and 4 hours northwest of New York City. The main routes into the city are New York highways 13, 79, 89, and 96. Interstate 86 (formerly NY State Route 17) intersects NY State Rt 13 in Elmira, about 45 minutes southwest of Ithaca. Interstate 81 connects with NY State Rt 79 half an hour from Ithaca at Whitney Point, and with NY State Rt 13 about 20 minutes from Ithaca in Cortland. You can reach Interstate 81 by taking NY State Route 17 (currently being transitioned to Interstate 86) West from New York City, or Interstate 476 North from Philadelphia. Interstate 90 connects to NY State Rt 96 near Geneva, NY, about 45 minutes from Ithaca. Good Luck Hope This Helps Sweet_Flower57

Directions to Cornell

www.info.cornell.edu/CUHomePage/Travel.html or http://www.ithacameetings.com/getting_here.htm.

Air

Please note: it has just come to our attention that JetBlue (www.jetblue.com/travelinfo/fares.html) flies from NYC/JFK directly to Syracuse with one-way fares from $49 to $105. Please check the JetBlue website for more information.

It is possible, though usually somewhat expensive (about US$250 or more), to fly directly into Ithaca from New York City. You need to get to LaGuardia (LGA) Airport (quite close to Kennedy but you do need to allow time to get between airports and from LGA). USAirways has several direct flights on very small planes to Ithaca; at present they leave at 7:40 am, 10:50 am, 1:59 pm, 5:30 pm, 8:29 pm. Flights take about an hour and then from Ithaca airport you get the airport limo (~US$10) to Hughes Hall.

Continental Airlines does have direct flights from Newark (New Jersey) to Syracuse at a round-trip (RT) cost of around $US180 or so (bought in advance). And there are fairly frequent direct flights on US Airways from LaGuardia to Syracuse for just over US$130. From Syracuse one can get a limo (for reservations call Airline Limousine Service at 607-273-3030), but it costs about US$75 RT. That might be a bit cheaper than flying into Ithaca from LaGuardia but the latter would be far more convenient.

Another option to consider is flying to Philadelphia or Pittsburgh (both in Pennsylvania), from either of which US Airways flies directly to Ithaca. One may also find it cheaper and/or more convenient to fly into Toronto, Canada, but there are possible border-crossing complications to consider. However, from Toronto, you can rent a car and drive down to Ithaca (approximately four plus hours) or take the new ferry across to Rochester and rent a car from there (two hours drive).

Rental cars could also obtained at any of the Kennedy, Newark or Philadelphia airports. A drive to Ithaca from each is about 4 hours.

Bus

If you're flying in to New York City, the cheapest way from NYC to Ithaca is via bus (coach). You can get a bus from either Newark or JFK to the Port Authority Bus Station at 42nd Street and 8th Avenue. On the second floor, you will find the ticket office for Shortline buses; roundtrip Ithaca-NYC is US$75-80, and the Ithaca buses leave from the third floor (the ticket staff can tell you from which place). The trip is about 5 hours and you can ask to be let off in Collegetown in front of Stella's from which it is just a short walk to Hughes Hall.

NOTE: The New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority has very recently introduced subway service between JFK airport and Manhattan. The A train is what you get at the JFK/Howard Beach stop and if you take it to 42nd Street in Manhattan, you will be right at the Port Authority Building from which buses for Ithaca leave every couple of hours. (There are two adjacent buildings in the complex and the one from which Short Line buses to Ithaca depart is the further north one.)

Train

You can also take the Amtrak train from Philadelphia's 30th Street Station, Newark's Penn Station or New York's Port Authority\Penn Station to Syracuse. However, from there your only alternative would be the aforementioned Airline Limousine Service at 607-273-3030 for US$75 RT to get into Ithaca.
