That the pope would criticize the Muslim religion for being filled with hatred and intolerance, when one only has to look as far as the Old Testament to find as much murderous intent, hatred and intolerance? Or that 300 years ago, the Christian church was the number one purveyor of conversions by the sword...

For those of you that don't think that current Islamic fundamentalists share anything in common with the Christian religion - read the Old Testament. Leviticus teaches us to kill homosexuals, adulterers, and those who don't obey the Sabath - i.e. pray to the Christian god. Exodus teaches us to that it is okay to own slaves and kill him/her in some instances, and as the lady shows Deut. preaches that we should kill those who try to convert us to another religion.

So... you think there is something wrong with calling attention to the fact that Islam is about 300 years out-of-syncronization (actually, more like 600 years) with the rest of society?
P.S.: For those that think that Christianity cut that stuff out of its own accord need to read up on history a little bit. It was secular humanism, depending from the 'Age of Enlightenment', that dragged society out from under the enforced ignorance and brutality of Christendom, and deprived Christianity of the political power that had enabled their hegemony in the west.

Try reading the Pope's statement. He was quoting an historian from the 14th century as saying the only new things Islam added to religion were hatred and war. The Pope then proceeded to disagree with the historian's statement.
Of course, very few people are reporting that. It is just another attempt by the radical Islamic leaders (not all members of Islam) to try to find a way to justifiy their killing of others.
Unfortunately too many people are aiding them in doing it.

I know, he is so hypocritical.
This bible verse is terroism in the flesh, killing someone because they aren't in the same religion as you:
"If your own full brother, or your son or daughter, or your beloved wife, or you intimate friend, entices you secretly to serve other gods, whom you and your fathers have not known, gods of any other nations, near at hand or far away from one end of the earth to the other: do not yield to him or listen to him, nor look with pity upon him, to spare or shield him, but kill him. Deut.13:7-12
And I think he was a member of the Nazi youth wasn't he? The old bat needs to bite the dust along with Christianity and every other dogmatic religion in the world.

I do. Although there has to be something said for good intentions. However, this particular pope has done little in my eyes to show good intentions. I have to say, as a non-Christian, that the former pope was pretty cool. This one gives me the creeps. I think he's the reincarnation of one of the Inquisition popes or something, personally. He just hasn't show it openly yet. Although his comments on Islam may just be the start.

Uh- the Christian Church hasn't been around for 3000 years!
The difference is Christians don't go around proclaiming that anyone who is not a Christian should be killed.
Muslims do. Tell me THAT is a peaceful religion?
They can criticize non-muslims all they want, but criticize the muslim faith, and you deserve death?
The world should be very very frightened of radical muslims.

i dont find it ironic. in fact, if you read the manuscript of what the pope actually said, you find that doing "evil" is an abomination to God.
the radical islamic clerics used just a very few sentences to start another "holy war", just as they did with the cartoons about mohommed.

Not only that but can you believe this jacka$$ (yea that's right .....i called the pope a jacka$$) was involved in HItlers SS Squads?
Unknown to many members of the church, however, Ratzinger’s past includes brief membership of the Hitler Youth movement and wartime service with a German army anti- aircraft unit.

The difference is that the Crusades were carried out against the teachings of Jesus. Islam teaches jihad.
In other words, one was not in accord with it's Leader's teachings and the other is in accord with it's leader's teachings.

Every religion has had to deal with bad or misguided people in charge, it does NOT make the other followers of that religion bad or hypocrites. So ironic NO! I think it shows how far, we as Christians have come.

...or that only 30 years ago, Catholic priests were collaborating with the most murderous dictatorial regimes in Latin America, or that the Catholic indirectly make their people despise those who are either homosexual, or promiscuous, or divorced and remarried, or those who don't go to church (does "you're going to hell" ring a bell?)...
