It can be a series of things, the ones that come to mind are the following:

1. He was burned.
2. He was bitten or in a fight.
3. If he was vaccinated it might be a reaction.
4. If you recently applied a product like Frontline or something to get rid of fleas, that can be the cause.
5. Stress induced hair loss...cats have it too.
6. Got stuck on the garage door. This happened to Felipe, my cat, a whole patch was peeled right off, but nothing happened to him thank God.
7. It was shaved by something or someone. You know there are cat haters out there, and cats do get in trouble with doors and cars sometimes.

In any case you should take him to the vet. Good luck!

RE:
My cat has a patch of missing hair on his back, no signs of irritation or redness, what could it be?

You're describing the same thing my cat gets from time to time. I have no idea what it is but it doesn't seem to bother him and the hair grows back. In regard to the answer commenting on used motor oil as a treatment for ringworm - Why would you do that to an animal? Besides, this is most likely not ringworm. Ringworm - being a fungus - can usually be cured with athletes foot cream.

Hs he just been vaccinated? It could be a reation to that. My cat dissapeared for a week and came back with a patch of hair missing, we live on the outskirts of town and guessed that George hitched a ride into town and walked home, I think the patch of fur got pulled out in the engine of the car he rode in.

I'm no expert but my mother's outside cats (and one inside) started losing hair and fleas were the culprits. I am sure there are other things that can cause a cat to lose hair, but look through your cat's hair VERY closely as t hey can be elusive.

If you see a flea - you need to treat it. If your cat is an inside cat and you have carpet, you will have to treat the cat's bedding AND carpet and possibly the upholstery on your cloth furniture. Fleas lay eggs all over the place.

i had an outdoor cat growing up and he had the same thing; Goldie would lick it alot, like it itched. we asked the vet & they couldn't find anything wrong. they tried putting one of those cones on his neck to keep him from licking, hopingn it would grow back, but he destroyed that.
he always had the problem. that was 15 years ago; ask your vet, maybe you'll get an answer. good luck.

I would guess fleas, or if you recently used a flea treatment? My mom's cat was going bald on his back, neck, legs. Had fleas, vet said it was from worms, tapeworms I'm guessing. Have a vet check him out.

~*~ could be a possible sign of stress, like humans, animals lose there hair due to stress. try relaxing her/him, by not switching there diet to often..or is there another animal? it could be gettin on her nerves..(that wasnt a joke) or if u recently moved form a location to the next it could be bothering her. or if u gave a vaccintaion, it could be that too. but either way, try to find ways to calm he down. go to ur vet for advice.. good luck to ur kitty ;)

Could be anything... but from my experience ....it could be that your cat it over-grooming ,but the skin would have been irritated...but in any case maybe you should check him out in the vet...

It could be nerves or allergies. I'd suggest contacting your vet.
