St. Francis of Assissi -1182-1226
As well as renouncing his wealth and ministering to the poor, St. Francis founded the Franciscan Order. St. Francis started the tradition of the "creche", or "nativity scene", with statues to illustrate the humble birth of Jesus in a stable. In the church in Assissi, thousands come from all over Italy to worship at Christmas and view the Nativity scene there.
There is also a tradition that St. Francis preached to the birds, and also made a "pact" with a wolf that was killing animals and children near the small town of Gubbio, where the townsfolk agreed to leave food out for the wolf in exchange for their safety.
Famous paintings of the period illustrate these events.
