It was Saul, later Paul, who approved of the stoning of Stephen. Stephen and the other deacons were chosen because the Greek speaking widows were not being served as well as the Jewish. Ananias was sent to Saul to baptize him. And Paul was sent to the Gentiles primarily.

Saul, whose name was later changed to Paul, gave consent to the stoning of Stephen.
Stephen had been chosen to assist the Apostles because he was a man of faith and filled with the Holy Spirit.
A man named Ananias was sent to lay hands on Saul so that he would see. After something like scales dropped from his eyes, he was baptised.
Barnabas took Saul to the Apostles to prove to them that he was a true disciple of Christ.
Saul was chosen to preach to the Gentiles.

The man was a pharasee named Saul. After his conversion to christianity he became the Apostle Paul who wrote a large part of the new testament.
